Pastrami [split from New York State]

Am I the only one who thinks good pastrami is an oxymoron? I mean, it's OK at best, but rarely good, and never great. To me it's like torturing a perfectly good brisket. Why?

perhaps you've never had a great pastrami sandwich. The old days of Katz's and the old Second Ave Deli had great ones. Today, well, I haven't had a great one in a while.

Katz's is still good especially if you ask for it with extra fat. heavily seasoned it is pure heaven. The only other place I have had decent pastrami in recent years was in Montreal on a plate of poutine sans gravy. I will try the place in Scarsdale & Riverdale though...

I agree, the feel of the fatty brisket in the mouth is heavenly, especially with lots of mustard and pickle on rye.

cubanat, try the deli in New Rochelle, you might like it.

Have you been to the Carnegie Deli lately? Years ago, they were also very good.

Maybe it's because I love good brisket, which I've found is almost impossible to find these days, that I don't like pastrami. I also dislike corned beef (but it's more because of the cabbage it's normally served with). Oddly enough, I love tongue. Where is the place in Scarsdale?

Will try the New Ro place as well. Thanks. Carnegie for the last decade or eevn longer has hit the bottom of the hill so hard and fast it was crazy. It was beyond special for years and then I believe it was sold or they expanded to do wholesale business but it just stinks now. Katz's is still where it's at sadly. Jhopp tongue but not pastrami or even corned beef?? Shocking! Like you said for each their own!!
