Rallos on Fort. Whats the scoop on this place?

Seems like it might be a major local, regular crowd type diner. It also looks way to well lit inside, although I've never stepped inside the doors. Anyone been?

Definitely been. Your assessment is correct. Its a "regular crowd type diner". Solid food, nothing out of the ordinary fantastic. Good place to go when you've had one to many the night before and really crave that diner menu. Its one of those places that you sense made their bones serving the dock trade with good hardy fare and now are struggling to keep up with the new environment in south Baltimore.

If your options for Fort Ave diners are Rallos or the Garden Restaurant, I'd choose Rallos every time.

Thanks, Kaz. The place doesn't look very inviting to me. I was just curious as to whether I was missing something. I'm kind of scared to go in there...the locals may peg me as one of those nasty newcomers, driving up there property prices and commuting to DC for work.....

I'm with Kaz. I've never felt unwelcome at Rallo's. I think it's fairly solid diner food. You're not going to feel like it's a culinary wonderland, but it's a decent breakfast place.

After a serious case of celebration last July 4, it restored us enough to actually make the JFX farmer's market. Trust me, when we woke up, I never would have believed that was possible.

The Garden does scare me though.

They were once much more colorful, but had a fire about ten years ago and were closed for some time to the great consternation of their public, which was not just the area. It was questionable whether they wanted to reopen, decided to rebuild in a sort of half-hearted way and cut the hours back, looking forward to the day when it plus their water-view vacant lot behind them would be developed.

The fire was a tragedy. I ate at Rallo's on a regular basis back in the 80s. Do they still serve sour beef and dumplings on Wednesdays?

They do indeed. I've never been for it, but it's definitely on the menu.

Daily specials are the bomb. Sauerbraten and dumplings (Wednesdays?) are the best in Baltimore since the glory days of Minnick's in Dundalk.
