Good Eats Carolina/Kure Beach

Hello Hounds,

Going to be in the Wilmington,Carolina Beach, Kure Beach area over July 4th weekend. Looking for good recommendations. I know about Catch. They were closed last time I was in the area (Memorial Day 09) and I know about Britt's Donuts as I stayed a 10 min walk from them. However, I don't recall any actual good places on Carolina and Kure beach themselves. So, that would be good. However the list of places near the Kilwyn's and downtown Wilmington won't hurt either. Any places to definitely avoid?

Britts Doughnuts still good. We liked a pancake house that was down there, but I don't recall the name and the wait can get crazy.

This is the short report of the places hit by our group during July 4th weekend.

Freddie's - girlfriends parents went her based on my forwarded rec and the rec of the people they were renting from.. (we hadn't gotten to town). They said they loved it.

Olde Pier Restaurant - right next to Freddie's. Despite being popular with the locals, this place was pretty bad. Small portions and everything fried. I forgot to note that it was calabash style and they didn't have a menu online. So that probably added to it, however, given that I've grown up around calabash seafood.. this was still a poor example. Most of my company considered it a dive.

Kate's Pancake House - It is exactly what you think it is. I had the sweet potato pancakes and they were great. Not overly sweet. Everyone seemed to love their breakfast and we got in just before the crowd.

Havana's - This is just up the road from Pop's and the Boardwalk at Carolina Beach. The food was great and the space was not as cramped as some other restaurants. Everyone really liked their food most of which was surf and turf.

Tastee Freeze - Cute walk up ice cream/hotdog spot across from Big Daddy's. It's ice cream...

Squiggley's - Also ice cream both ice cream places were tasty..

We were suppose to go to some place in Wilmington called the Boat Landing or something of that sort, but due to illness never got there.

Michael's Seafood and Grill - this was a unique and large space. The food was mostly broiled or baked and that was good. One person got a seafood feast with oysters, mussels, clams and crab legs. I think everyone enjoyed it.

There was a Port City Java just before/after the bridge that separates Carolina Beach and Wilmington/Monkey Junction area...

I had a great breakfast at A&G BBQ in Carolina Beach. The biscuits were especially good. Only had breakfast there, so I'd be curious if anyone else has anything to say about it. I did try their sauce on my potatoes, it was good.

Further reconnection of my culinary synapses reminded me that I had a very nice meal at Tuscan Grill, which is in CB, a few doors down from the Subway. IIRC, other people have had poorer experiences than we did, so you may wish to check other threads. Still, I'd give it a hearty recommendation.

HOw are the Ocean Grill, Deckhouse and Bowmans?

You have got to try Granny's Kitchen for breakfast!! I was there for the first part of this week with 4 boys and we ate there everyday. Food was great, and the owners were super nice. Menu is anything from the usual country breakfast to Shrimp & Grits. One morning we split an order of fried green tomatoes that were excellent. When you have 4 boys, 2-15 years old and 2-9 years old begging to go back, you know it is good. I think the blonde waitress (Kim) and the guy at the cash register are married and the owners. When you first walk in, say "Hi Kim." You might get a free order of pancakes.

Not a strange look like who the heck are you? I remember reading about Granny's kitchen before the last time. Feel free to give Wilmington Recs as well. I'm not sure where we will be spending our dining times and so a good mix is welcomed. Does the Calabash place also do broiled and steamed seafood for the health conscious?

Yes, the Old Pier House does broiled. Not sure about steamed.

You must be talking about a different place. I was in Carolina Beach 2 weeks ago and ate at Granny's Country Kitchen. After reading your post I called them just to make sure and they are still open.

As I posted before and still recommend:

The Old Pier House Restaurant right at Kure Beach Pier is my choice. Great Calabash style seafood..

Seriously thinking about driving down from Raleigh just for lunch...its that good!

YOur link doesn't work but I've been right by it before. Like I said last time there made the mistake of eating at Big Daddy's and then going to the Tastee Freeze next door.

In Carolina Beach try a little hole in the wall place called The GulfStream, down near the boat docks. Good food. Good breakfast/lunch/dinner. Not fancy, but good. and not too expensive

Avoid Big Daddy's like the plague. I haven't been to Pleasure Island in a couple of years, and it seems like restaurants turn over pretty quickly (the aforementioned excepted), so I'm going to be sparing with recommendations. There is a very nice coffee shop in CB right where the road curves around the little lake -- might be a branch of Port City Java.

Wouldn't be surprising given it started there. I think Big Daddy's is the one I wound up in last time. Is it across the street from a pier and a walk up burger/ice cream place that is part of a convenience store? I mean I grew up around Sandpiper and Dixie Queen in East NC and I could tell this place was rip... maybe it was big daddy.. You'd think there'd be a better selection.. it is shame.

That's a real shame about Big Daddy's. My Uncle Tommy (Big Daddy) wouldn't like hearing that if he were still around. The family opened that up in the 70s & sold it in the 70s (if my memory serves). It's been through a hand or two since then.

Big Daddy...Uncle Tommy was a character from the word go! He used to ride around on a fuchsia pink, convertible Caddy with huge cow horns on the hood (I believe they were from a Longhorn). One day, we looked down the road from our farm shop to see a fairly long line of cars slowly moving down the highway. At first we thought it was a funeral. A few minutes passed and we hadn't noticed the line of cars pass the shop yet. Curious, we stepped back out to see what was going on only to see that the line of cars was being held up by a horse & buggy...a hourse...& buggy! Guess who?!? Big Daddy on a small buckboard being pulled by a Shetland pony! Mind you, he lived a full 2+ miles down the road...a two lane country road that's pretty well a main secondary with plenty of traffic & log trucks. He was in his 80s when he pulled that stunt...and he was the same up until his last day.

Happened to look on a map of Pleasure Island: the coffee shop is called Grind, it's not a branch of Port City Java. Also, Granny's Country Kitchen has changed ownership recently. Don't know if that's affected the quality of the grub.
