Any great bagels in Berkeley?
We will be visiting friends in Berkeley this summer and are looking for a place to satisfy our daily bagel and a schmeer habit. Really strong coffee is a plus. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I agree skipping bagels here is best but do try Cafe Fanny for light breakfast and cafe au lait...right next to Acme bread. one of my favorite things is cafe au lait with acme levain toast and their seasonal jam. simple but perfect.
also for afternoon coffee with pastry...Crixa Cakes is a must. also a really lovely pot of tea besides coffee. cakes are unforgettable.-----

Thanks for the tip, I think, sounds like we should leave our bagel habit for NY and look for another way to start the day, how about French or Italian bakery with great morning bread?

Those we have lots of! Try La Farine on College or Solano, Crixa Cakes on Adeline, Acme on Gilman, Masse's on Shattuck, or Sweet Adeline on Shattuck.

Berkeley Bagel (on Gilman) makes decent bagels that are pretty good if you eat them right away. They are by no means "great" (not by East Coast standards), but I find them passable when I have a craving. They are the best I've found in the East Bay.
