I'm interested in one aspect in particular of the OP: Shelter Island. Any good places for a mid-week lunch? (Someplace a little more casual than Sunset Beach--I usually take the ferry over to SI and bike around.)

Chequit Inn used to be pretty good, however there are new owners and I haven't tried recently. But they are right off the North Ferry. Then just down the street from them, The Dory, it's a pub type place right on the water. Bike farther inland on 114 and you have Bob's Fish Market, the freshest fish dishes around, you can eat out on their covered porch if you like: also just past them, Pat and Steves for really casual, family style, it's where all the locals eat. If they have their fried flounder on the special board, you have to try, and Steve's famous clam chowder may be the best I ever tasted.

Planet Bliss in SI is terrific. I've been for dinner but don't know if they are open for lunch. I've been twice and it's been consistently good. Make reservations as it gets booked and is very popular...and a relatively small place.

Check out Jamesport Manor Inn.
I think Frisky Oyster is a bit over-rated and over-priced (especially their wine list). I've been there at least 3 times and while nothing is bad there wasn't anything that was great. (Note: I haven't been in a year now so maybe they are improving.
I went to Noah's once and that visit was definitely a cut above the Frisky Oyster.
Vine in Greenport is a very nice stop too.
Here is a thread where I have reviews of Vine and Noah's plus there are other recs from other posters:

Sunset Beach is DEFINITELY a unique and worthwhile experience.
Noah's is a new one in Greenport, food is decent at best.
If you haven't tried Frisky Oyster in Greenport, I'd definitely give that a try.None of these can compare to North Fork Table, though.

I have heard very mixed reviews on Noah's - I didn't try Frisky Oyster yet - but I don't know why I am under the impression that it had closed? Is that true? And also, we weren't overly impressed with North Fork - perhaps our expectations were too high - but i am wondering if over all of those we should give it another try? What about throwing Jedidiahs in the mix???

Frisky Oyster is still open. Frisky Oyster Bar (which used to inhabit Noah's location) is the one that shut down.
I'd give North Fork Table another try. You're not going to have a better meal anywhere else. Try to sit at the bar if you want to try different things. Tables do prix fixe and tasting menus only. The prix fixe is $60 or $65, so it isn't all too bad.
Seeing some A Mano recs here. I didn't like the place, but I'm willing to give it another try and I think it's a decent recommendation. People seem to like it. The space is really nice, and there's outdoor seating. Not very scenic, though.
