Devilish Menu Item

Is anyone else noticing that deviled eggs are showing up on a lot of menus in the Bay Area? They are on the Sidebar menu in Oakland and now the newly opened Wayfare Tavern and Prospect are featuring them. Is this the latest menu food trend?

Bocanova in Oakland does a great version with flakes of Dungeness crab (the same version is served at Market Bar in the city, where the chef used to work).

Yes, I had it at Market Bar 5 years ago. I think that was the first time I'd seen deviled eggs on a menu.

They're cheap, easy to make, can be prepared ahead of service, and people love them. I sometimes feel kind of ashamed at how old fashioned they are when I bring them as an offering to a snack bar or potluck dinner, but they always disappear quickly. Maybe restaurants are just picking up on this.

Possibly it is an attempt to help pointybird overcome an aversion.

I've also seen them at Cesar in the East Bay, and they have them at T-Rex. If this is a new trend, I like it.
