Doing a bar mitzvah for 200+ in October, need recommendations hopefully not quite as expensive as a wedding! Any ideas welcome? Dinner on Saturday night. October 2010

If you know anyone affiliated with Caltech, you can look at either the Athenaeum or Dabney Hall. The Ath does the cooking in house, and you need a caterer for Dabney Hall, and it might be a bit cold in October since the bigger area is outside.

I've been to a number of different events/parties at Pasadena Museum of California Art. The roof-top space has both indoor and outdoor space, great view...which can accommodate 200. They also have other space indoors within the galleries. I must confess I have no idea of the cost, but would be almost sure it's less than the Athenaeum (a great recommendation, if you know someone).

It's a little bit further west, but the Eagle Rock Center of the Arts is quite lovely, and available for rent. It may or may not be the size you need (details at the link below).

I'm not sure if they are still renting out but the Masonic Lodge in Pasadena at the corner of Cordova and Euclid is beautiful.

I would have said the Athenaeum as well...
