aka Don Pepe's Habana Grill in Altamonte will be closing after this weekend.
Sad news-it was a great Cuban restaurant!

  1. I know, right? It was one of our favorite places in all of Central Florida! First Greek Flame Taverna moves from Casselberry to Dr. Phillips (which for us might as well be closing entirely), and now we're losing Don Pepe's. I hope to make it there this weekend for one last meal.

Well, I went to Don Pepe's on Saturday night with a party of 10, and it was bittersweet. I was happy to note that the place was slammed, but in the six years I've been eating there, I've never seen it NOT busy. Despite being in a big group and despite the restaurant being filled to capacity, we got excellent service as usual.

My wife and I decided to go all out, with one last hurrah. We split an order of tostones (the best in town, and they had never been better) and a seafood martini that seemed better in concept than in actuality. The martini glass was full of shrimp, scallops, squid, and tender octopus along with some field greens, onions, and plenty of citrus juice, but it was too hard to eat to be as much fun as it should have been. I got my favorite main dish, empanizada (crispy breaded flat steak), covered with sauteed onions and served with congri and maduros, and it was brilliant as usual.

Don Pepe's Habana Grill was a great family-owned place that served the best Cuban food I've ever had outside of Miami, and we were lucky to have it as long as we did, first in Winter Park and then in Altamonte Springs. My wife and friends and I will miss it like crazy.

    2. Oh no! I've been going there since it was just Don Pepe's and a little hole in the wall. Can't say I'm totally surprised however; the last time we went it was fairly empty on a Friday night. Food was always good, though....I wonder what happened....
