Guanatos Ice Cream in Concord or Bay Point?

Melanie Wong Jun 22, 2010 11:18 PM

Buried in a thread that started off about Moraga Options, Jim Leff said, "Let us all know if you ever try that corn-and-cream ice cream (like a salvadoran tamal de elote rendered in frozen dessert). I grieve for missing it."

He spotted this in Concord at Guanatos Ice Cream. According to the website, the first location in Bay Point opened in 2007 and also mentions "organic fruits and ingredients".

Who's been to Guanatos?

("Guanatos" is slang for Guadalajara.

We had dinner at Chopan Kabob last night so it made sense to try Guanato's for dessert. I've eaten at Chopan Kabob often in the past and it's a real gem in an unassuming area of Concord. This was my first time at Guanatos, which is in an indoor gallery attached to the supermarket. The doors to the gallery were locked, so we went through the market. The flavors we had were elote (corn), coco (coconut), cajeta (caramel), chongos zamoranos (a Mexican dessert with cheese curd, caramel, cinnamon, lime), and platano (banana). The ice cream was delicious, smooth and creamy, and flavored with good, fresh ingredients. The elote had little chewy bits of corn, but it also included cinnamon, which overpowered any subtle corn flavor. Still, it was very good and reminiscent of horchata. The coco and cajeta were some of the best I've had. Better tropical fruit flavors and better quality than Mitchells or Bombay Creamery, IMHO. They also have a lot of paletas, which I'll have to try on another trip. Guanato's will become a regular stop for my family.

I did a little digging and figured out that i've not been to Chopan since 2003, will have to remedy that.

Thanks for checking out Guanatos. I can't believe we'd missed it till now. It sounds like a real find, and just in time for National Ice Cream Month in July. I stumbled onto a new paleta shop myself this weekend, report coming soon.

Hate to get slightly off-topic, but I just wanted to say Chopan is such a good place and definitely a gem. Their koobideh kabob is delicious; it reminds me of my Iranian uncle's version. I just heard about this place a few weeks ago, and I've probably driven past it thousands of times. I will definitely have to check out Guanatos the next time I'm in the same plaza.

Went today after a most excellent lunch at Tortilleria El Molino down the road in Concord. Completely agree with j mather on the quality - the ice cream was insanely creamy and the fruit flavors were all strong and authentic.

I was reminded somewhat of Marco Polo out in the Sunset but found the actual base of the ice cream to be much better. I didn't fall in love with the elote/corn, but it was very good. Guava was great albeit full of seeds if that's not your thing. Chongos zamoranos was an explosion of great flavor.

Highly recommend a visit if in the area - there were plenty more things to try (frozen fruit bars, milkshakes, and more) and the area is full of good eats.

Thanks, I didn't have time to swing by there yesterday, so I was happy to read another report.

With National Ice Cream month about to start, Guanato's needs an update. The Concord store is closed. The main store in Bay Point is still open though, and worth a visit. When I went yesterday, they said they are looking at a Pleasant Hill location for next year. We bought a wide variety of paletas yesterday, including cookies and cream, sliced strawberry, vanilla, coffee, chongos, mango, melon, watermelon, caramel, pecan, pistachio, limon, and possibly some others. And they have many other flavors to try. They range from $1.25 to $2. The paletas are frozen very hard at the store, so they were fine in an ice chest for the 20 minute drive home. If I was going much further, I'd pack some ice in with them.

Thanks for the update. I'd discovered the Concord store had closed several months ago when I was nearby. At the time I'd placed a call to the Bay Point store and the phone just rang and rang. I'm happy to hear that it's still open and looking for a second spot.

Much to my delight, Guanatos has opened in Walnut Creek at

                704 Bancroft Rd. Ste C
                Walnut Creek, Ca. 94598
                Ph: (925) 956 1126

This is the shopping center at Bancroft and Treat. It's across from Safeway, next to Jamba Juice. I stopped by and had a scoop of chongos ice cream, still a creamy favorite of mine. I also tried the corn, which tasted too much like cinnamon oil, and the avocado, which is incredibly smooth on the palate with a few small chunks of avocado in it. I also bought a load of paletas -- the passion fruit is incredibly flavorful, the coffee is mild but very good.

Guanatos has reopened its store inside Las Montanas at 2691 Monument Blvd. Havent had a chance to try it yet but everything looks delicious.

Last fall I finally had an easy opportunity to stop by the Bay Point store when BBQ duty called for an overnight in Antioch. It was a cold and drizzly day, and despite the weather, I went back inside after one paleta to get some ice cream. Here's my scoop sitting on the dashboard.

I loved it so much I returned the next day on my way back to the City and loaded up my little cooler bag with paletas to share with friends that night. Very high quality and almost every flavor was a hit. I'll also mention that the paletas are slightly larger here but priced the same (or lower) than other places, while delivering better quality.

As I mention in this thread about the Walnut Creek store, the paletas are in the running for best I've had, and to date that includes close to two dozen places scattered throughout California and Arizona.
