Brunch at OddFellows
I've been walking by this place for the last few months and never once was I tempted to go in. The place looks shabby and strange and there are quite a few more modern looking brunch places withing 1-2 minutes walk of this restaurant. However, I was curious, so last Sunday we decided to try it out for Brunch. The menu looked like any other menu - pancakes, eggs, hot cereal, regular choices, but there was one item that was interesting: Breakfast for Two. After a short discussion with a waitress we were convinced that it would be the best choice and we were not disappointed.
The breakfast comes in a big and very hot wooden pot. It includes four eggs, lots of fried potatoes, crispy bacon, really nice breakfast sausage and juicy melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. On top of it there's grilled asparagus, a few cherry tomatoes, hollandaise sauce and a lot of toast with a side of homemade jam. This whole concoction (minus toast and sauce) is then mixed with a wooden spoon.
Even though the ingredients were quite common, I thought it was a really interesting and fun concept. The potatoes were nicely seasoned, bacon was crisp and pork belly was really soft with a nice melting layer of fat. I wish there was a little bit more asparagus and tomatoes and maybe less potatoes. The jam was really good, made with cherries and raspberries and perfect with toast. Hollandase sauce wasn't the best, quite bland and greasy, but there was enough seasoning in everything else, that the sauce wasn't really needed. Coffee was weak and tasteless, but as I am not a coffee connoisseur, it didn't really bother me. The service was nice, relaxing and very friendly.
