Looking for best food in Portsmouth, NH for "special occasion" dinner

My husband and I are heading to Portsmouth in mid-August and are looking for a great restaurant at which to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We generally like all types of food, but prefer fresh, local ingredients, want an attractive setting, and are ok splurging a bit. Please let me know your recommendations. We will be staying at Wentworth-by-the-Sea, so if the recommended spot is not exactly in downtown Portsmouth, we'd be ok with that too since we'll have to drive no matter what.

Thanks for your recommendations!

Lisa

Black Trumpet, I couldn't recommend it enough. I think it matches all of your requirements more than the other suggestions so far.

Definitely Black Trumpet. Romantic and the food is great.

Consider Anneke Jans, a small "modern bistro" across the bridge in Kittery, ME.

I agree, there are a lot of choices: Cava is fun tapas, Four is a new favorite, The Wellington Room (great view, too), The Black Trumpet, Brazo, - but Anneke Jans is a step above the rest.

What about Cafe Mirabelle? We went there for Valentines Day. The food and atmosphere were both wonderful.
