Looking for best food in Portsmouth, NH for "special occasion" dinner

My husband and I are heading to Portsmouth in mid-August and are looking for a great restaurant at which to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We generally like all types of food, but prefer fresh, local ingredients, want an attractive setting, and are ok splurging a bit. Please let me know your recommendations. We will be staying at Wentworth-by-the-Sea, so if the recommended spot is not exactly in downtown Portsmouth, we'd be ok with that too since we'll have to drive no matter what.

Thanks for your recommendations!

  1. What about Cafe Mirabelle? We went there for Valentines Day. The food and atmosphere were both wonderful.

    1. Consider Anneke Jans, a small "modern bistro" across the bridge in Kittery, ME.

I agree, there are a lot of choices: Cava is fun tapas, Four is a new favorite, The Wellington Room (great view, too), The Black Trumpet, Brazo, - but Anneke Jans is a step above the rest.

      2. Jumpin Jay's Cafe

        1. Black Trumpet, I couldn't recommend it enough. I think it matches all of your requirements more than the other suggestions so far.

Definitely Black Trumpet. Romantic and the food is great.

          2. Thank you all for your suggestions!! I can't wait to try at least one or two of these recommendations.
