If you love learning about spices, herbs, edible flowers.... give me a site!

I just came across a superb website discussing spices, their origins, botanical family (GREAT), etymology (LOVE it), usage.... and with very nice photos. "Aidan Brooks: Trainee Chef - Spices."

Here it is: http://aidanbrooksspices.blogspot.com/2007/10/nutmeg.html

Look, e.g,, it offers:
"" Spice Index where you will find pictures of each individual spice and links to their corresponding spice pages.

Spice Overview .....lists each spice and culinary herb and provides a general summary, together with specific information on (a) botanical family, (b) main gustatory and olfactory characteristics, (c) degree of pungency, (d) main culinary uses.

Botanical Families Of Spice groups them into their botanical families, under their Latin and common family names. <check it out: http://aidanbrooksspices.blogspot.com/2007/10/botanical-families-of-spice.html >

Spices By Dominant Flavour groups the herbs and spices into those that are predominantly sweet, salty, bitter, sour or combinations of these.""""

HERE is another good one I've bookmarked: "Gernot Katzer's Spice Pages" : http://www.uni-graz.at/~katzer/engl/Laur_nob.html
This site is especially neat because it gives the name of the spice in other languages, and in addition to etymology, mythology, etc., it gives chemical constituents.
It is also available in German. Plus, Gernot links to other useful sites for each of the spices he discusses.

Here's another I'll mention: Edible Flowers: http://whatscookingamerica.net/EdibleFlowers/EdibleFlowersMain.htm

For a glossary of Indian spices, herbs and ingredients in English and Hindi, this is really useful, though it is not as encylopedic in nature as some of the other sites here. http://www.cuisinecuisine.com/IndianS...

I really appreciate the work people put into these sites. Thank you!

I'm going to go through my own bookmarks to add to this thread. In the meantime, do you have any other great spice (or herb) info sites? Please share!

  1. i like this information from Salt Works:
    http://www.saltworks.us/salt_info/si_gourmet_reference.asp

(but when it comes to actually buying the different salts & accessories, The Meadow is the best site - they even have the salts categorized by country of origin. http://www.atthemeadow.com/shop/index...)

    1. The World Spice website has a lot of information about the spices, blends, and teas they sell as well as a nice variety or recipes that call for some of the spices. The reason I like it better than the encyclopedic siies is that if something sounds really interesting, I can order it instead of going on a quest! My latest order just arrive a couple of days ago, and I'm playing with the Tasmanian Pepper. Rather interesting. I seem to be on a salt and pepper kick here lately. Fun! Anywway their webits is:
