Burlington (or surrounds) dinner out - without the kids!

My husband and I are spending a week with my family on vacation in South Hero, VT, the end of June. Our children are 1 and 3, and as we don't get out as often as we used to (we are former foodies, now foodies-in-waiting), we are very excited about having family around to babysit a couple of nights! We have already made reservations at Hen of the Wood and are looking for a second restaurant for dinner. We will likely be accompanied by my brother and his girlfriend and are looking for something a bit less upscale, with a fun atmosphere, perhaps some good cocktails.

We are considering Bluebird Tavern, The Green Room and American Flatbread - but are definitely open to other suggestions. For some reason I am underwhelmed by the idea of the frequently recommended (Single Pebble,Trattoria Delia, and L'Amante) – and feel like we want something a bit more…fun? But feel free to convince me otherwise!

None of us are familiar with the area, and would appreciate the feedback of other hounds who are! Suggestions?

  1. The Kitchen Table in Richmond (actually just northwest of Richmond, right off the highway, about 15 mins SE of Burlington). Nice old colonial house, superb American bistro cooking, local produce whenever possible (Misty Knoll chicken!) We live in the SF Bay Area and have eaten at many good restaurants there and in NYC and France, and this ranks right up there with the better ones.

    1. Bluebird Tavern has become my new Burlington favorite. Very creative cocktail list. Interesting "farm to table" menu. They buy the best local produce and whole animals and break them down themselves. They make their own sausages, pâtés, pickles, preserves, yogurt, ice creams. I never fail to have a great meal and a great time when I'm there.
