Chinese restaurants on Spadina.
I have a friend visiting from England towards the end of next week. However he grew up and went to university here (UT) but most of his working life has been in England. He has suggested that on one of his evenings we go off to Spadina for a Chinese meal which he remembers fondly from his university days. I, too, enjoy Chinese food but haven't been to any of the Spadina restaurants for some while now, so I thought I'd turn to the kind people here for advice. Anywhere you'd like to suggest we might go?
Two or three weeks ago, I remember, there was quite an enthusiastic discussion of a particular restaurant on Spadina but I forgot to note its name. All I vaguely remember is that somebody said there was both an English and Chinese version of the menu and that it was worth asking a waiter about the Chinese offerings.
Also, to give my friend some choice, is there a restaurant that specializes in seafood? Maybe that's a route he would like to take.
As far as I remember,he's not partial to one particular region of Chinese cooking as opposed to another.
Anyway, thanks in advance

My family often goes to the Taste of China on Spadina. We usually have a set order since we've been going there for so long and my grandparents picked stuff and we stuck with it because it's so good. They make the usual Chinese seafood dishes that are good like lobster with ginger and onions and steamed fish. They make a nice hot pot with vermicelli, seafood and vegetables and tofu. The other non-seafood items are great!

If you like spicy food, Sichuan Garden and the new Sichuan House have good Sichuanese food.
For northern-style Chinese food, try Chinese Traditional Buns on Dundas just west of Spadina. They have a decent selection of western Chinese dishes too.

My recommendation would be Lee Garden...good food, and English friendly, but can be very crowded with ridiculous line-ups. Alternately you could consider equally E-Pan, New Sky, and Xam Yu. All 4 restaurants are on the East side of Spadina between Dundas and College. They all have good seafood dishes, with Xam Yu perhaps having more selection.

Not that it's a seafood place, but one place to avoid is Rol San. Quite some time since I had been there, and two months ago a few of us dropped in for dim sum, because all of us recalled enjoying it. The best of it was adequate (we ran the menu from the usual har gow and sui mai to rather adventurous offal) and some was OK, but one dish was inedible (all of us game for anything). Either our tastes have become more sophisticated, or they have dropped their standards. Or, a bit of Column A, a bit of Column B.
