Help - going to Edgewater this Friday afternoon to check out Japanese shopping and would like to have lunch or early dinner at a decent restuarant with an outside view of Manhattan.

Has anyone been to Crab House Seafood, Le Jardin or other waterside places they iiked?

Thanks for your help.

  1. If you're heading to Mitsuwa in Edgewater, there are two on-site options: the Mitsuwa food court and Matsushima.

I've eaten at the food court many times and there are many Japanese styles represented: noodles, cutlets, tempura, etc. which you can easily supplement with sushi, sashimi, rolls, prepared foods, and lunch boxes to-go from the grocery store. It's all good (well, the "Italian Tomato" isn't so much my speed), and you can see the City from the food court.

Going upscale from a food court, Matsushima is a stand-alone restaurant next door to the grocery store and right on the water. I've been there a couple of times, and thought the food good. Although it's a self-described steakhouse, I've never had the steak there, choosing instead the sushi/sashmi, cooked seafood, and other Japanese specialties.

      UPDATE: Matsushima is now CLOSED.

    2. Matsushima is a wonderful place. Outside the decor is very severe; inside it warms up a bit. On your way to a very spacious dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over upper Manhattan, you'll pass a few of the most incredibly ornate private dining rooms. We've never seen anyone sitting in there.

When you're not captivated by the breathtaking view of the water, the focus is on a huge two-story atrium with an enormous rock waterfall. There's a long, handsome sushi bar off to the side. I don't recall what their cocktail lounge looks like. All I know is that they sure can do a great job with the cocktails we get at table.

Steaks are very good but very expensive. Tempura could use a little work. We've had soft shell crabs here, however, that were out of this world (not yet this year).

The Mitsuwa food court is one of the few places I've been able to get one of my favorite Japanese-style guilty pleasures: curry hamburger. It's good here but is better in NYC at a place on 86th and 2nd (the name of which I forgot).

      1. I have dined at Le Jardin a few times and always had a nice meal there. They provide a beautiful view of NYC.

In Weehawken there is the Chart House which I have enjoyed a few meals at but I have read mixed reviews by others. Across the Street is Ruth Chris Steak House which also gives you a nice view of NYC.
