A friend asked where her daughter and friends, who are coming to Santa Monica, could have an inexpensive meal and look for celebs. I have no idea! My guess is they'd travel to Beverly Hills- but they're college students so funds are limited. I can name the upscale places but anyone with ideas for the less expensive ones?

Search the board for a few days ago for Teen suggestions -- there were quite a few good ones.
Try Urth Caffe on Melrose and also in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, various Coffee Bean and Tea Leafs, Swingers late at night.
Have them read the Privacy Watch section on defamer.com to see where people have been spotted. I think it comes out on Thursdays.

Try the Newsroom, across from the Ivy. Less celebs than the Ivy, but much less expensive and you can still see the people on the patio(from a distance).

Also second the suggestion for Coffee Bean.

Hey, I once saw Gary Busey at Baja Fresh, so you can really run into people anywhere in LA. Just keep your eyes open.

Very close to Toast is Joan's on Third, a frequent hangout for Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Richie, etc. It's a deli, albeit an upscale one, so they can just pick up a sandwich, sit outside, and watch for celebs.

While I think that current Hollywood dietary constraints call for little to no food consumption, I would recommend Ammo on Highland or Ita Cho on Beverly. Both have high celebrity to commoner ratios. For "free" celebrity watching, I recommend Hollywood Farmers Market on Sunday, Pacfic Theatres at the Grove, and especially hiking at Runyon Canyon.

Good luck, but don't hit any stars with your car...it's frowned upon.

Try The Grove shopping center (Fairfax & Third), if it isn't too far east for them. Nights and weekends in particular seem to bring out youth oriented celebrities ( i.e., people I don't know but who my teenagers go gaga over). Often see celebs at the Pacific Theatre and the IPOD store on a regular basis, and occasionally at Barnes & Noble. I've seen some big time celebs at the Whisper Lounge a couple of times (Jack Nicholson for example), but the place is pricey for food and if they're under age, the couldn't hang in the bar. Lots of fairly inexpensive food choices if they avoid the places in The Grove itself and take the short walk to the semi-attached Farmer's Market where there are food stalls for just about any taste. (Check this board for lots of opinions about the various food stalls in the FM.)

Decent celebrity quotient at The Farmer's Market itself, I might add. James Woods, Paul Newman (now that's cool!). Eric Stoltz seems to live out in front of The Gumbo Pot.

Sat next to Jeff Goldblum at the Italian restaurant across from Morels (restaurant name escapes me) at The Grove a while back (yawn). Food was decent, at least.

Bars can inexpensive cheap, if you order right. Celeb watering holes:
Bar at Chateau Marmont
Bar at Geisha House
Bar at Four Seasons Beverly Hills

The one place I go regularly that I see the most celebs is the Gelsons market on Hyperion in Silverlake. Second would probably be the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood.

Restaurant where I've (cumulatively) seen the most: Fred62 on Vermont in Los Feliz.

I agree on Mauro's Cafe in the Fred Segal on Melrose - I've seen Gwyneth Paltrow + more there, but that was couple years ago. They should walk up & down Robertson between Beverly & 3rd, they're bound to bump into an US Weekly type starlet. It may be hard to find them in restraunts b/c they don't seem to eat!
We also saw Cameron Diaz & Drew Barrymore at the Standard restaurant on Sunset last year. I used to go hang out by the pool there and see celebs - all it cost was a $5 lemonade.
