In Chicago, have reservations for 2, but dining alone

Hi all,

I'm a Vegas newbie, loving exploring the myriad of choices there since moving from Virginia Beach (although the farmer's markets obviously were a loss)...

In Chicago for a surgical conference, but got a wonderful phone call yesterday from Alinea offering me a slot to dine on Saturday (Saturday!!) night... (8:00)

I made reservations for 2, since I'll take up a 2 top table either way, figured I'd open the offer to any other Hounds who would be interested, local or otherwise.

It'd be nice to make a connection here in Chicago and would be happy to give feedback/recommendations for Vegas as well.

Moto Friday night at 8:00 as well, reservation for 2.

Thursday at Blackbird and going to try to get into Purple Pig tonight or maybe a place I found a few years ago, Belgian beer specialists with a long copper bar, had an awesome shrimp sausage that was so light and airy, delectable! Anyone know the name?

Will post reviews after dining. (probably during conference, lol...)

Stephen

Looking forward to your reviews. But just fyi, it's perfectly okay to tell restaurants (especially high end ones) that you're by yourself. It's also a courtesy in a day when many restaurants find it hard to make ends meet.

In the case of Alinea, they're planning on certain number of diners and their tables won't turn more than twice. If you tell them two and then show up by yourself they've spent twice as much on your table as they had to. While your tab probably covers the cost of ingredients for both people, I'm sure they'd appreciate the opportunity to sell another seat.

First off, my blog has many of solo meals at Chicago and Vegas hot spots.

In response to your question, Alinea actually has two specific tables for singles - I'd call and make sure they know you are dining solo. At this point you've probably been and returned - I hope it went wonderfully.

I'd personally skip Moto - if you're going to spend that money I'd do L2O or somewhere else first.

I was about to post that Moto is not particularly expensive; at least, it wasn't when I was there, but it's been a few years now (three, maybe). I see on their website that they now show two tasting menus, for $135 and $195. Is that all they offer now? If so, they're encroaching on "top chef" territory, and I wonder how successful they will be by doing so.

Regardless, if you want another expensive meal, L2O is the last place I'd choose in the upper-tier price category. I've had far better meals at Everest, TRU, Spiaggia, and Avenues, so I'd choose one of those rather than L2O.

Can't speak to Everest or Avenues, but I think Avenues is too "same" as Alinea. TRU is excellent but I find Gras more talented and the selections more interesting.

Spiaggia was a downright terrible experience, albeit with good food. It was potentially the worst fine dining experience of my life.

Moto was expensive, the platings interesting, the food itself made from average ingredients and not all that tasty. The room and service were quite dull, as well.
