Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

If we liked the atmosphere at Carmine's.....

Two 40-something women, leaving their husbands back home in New Orleans, wanting to blow it out while in New York. Any suggestions for a big, lively, restaurant, casual but not scruffy with a big ole' bar, good food of course, maybe Italian or Greek or Latin American (no steak, no sushi, no French) - about $150ish at most for both of us, including wine. We're in the Murray Hill area, but anywhere in Manhattan would be fine. I want our first night out fun! Thanks so much. Any suggestions at all about anything at all would be welcome!

  1. I would look into Otto. Hits pretty much all your requests, including the big ole' bar.

    Lupa might work too.

Both lively restaurants with good food, but the atmosphere (and food itself) couldn't be much farther from Carmine's.

    2. If you like Mexican and the weather is nice try El Rio Grande. Great Mexican with an outside patio and nice bar scene early in the evening. It's in Murray Hill on the West side of 3rd AV literally between 37&38 since it fills the whole block. Try the Sliced steak nachos! To die for!! Most times we order a pitcher of potent Marguerita's a few appetizers and maybe one entree to share. Never been disappointed.

      1. What about Inoteca on 3rd Ave. They have a nice big bar and Italian food. They also have outdoor tables. It's a lively place.

Also I really like the Water Club on 30th. The view is outstanding. It's on a barge on the E. River It's quiet at lunch but get's lively at night and the bar is outstanding. You would enjoy the bar area. You can eat there in the bar or in the dining room overlooking the river.

        1. You might also like The Breslin, though it's not nearly as big as Carmines.
