Heading to Mt. Rushmore from Des Moines at the end of July. Anyplace we should make a point of stopping to eat?

  1. I don't have any suggestions for on the way, but once you get here you'll have to check out the Alpine Inn in Hill City and the taffy shop in Keystone.

The Corn Exchange in Rapid City is exceptional

I'm sorry to report that the Corn Exchange has closed. The space is now home to an Indian restaurant.

    2. Jake's in Deadwood is wonderful. It is in The Midnight Star, owned by Kevin Kostner. It is an upscale place with the best carpaccio I've ever had. It was buffalo.

      1. I love Corn Exchange in Rapid City and Alpine Inn in Hill City. Both are totally different experiences.
For the Alpine Inn, I would recommend go early, meaning at 5 pm if not then expect to wait. For dinner they only have one thing on the menu, which is bacon wrapped filet mignon, salad with house ranch dressing, potato, toast for under 15. Nice simple wine list. The desserts are wonderful and a majority are home made. This place is very popular and food is done well.
The Corn Exchange has great stuff and a majority of time MJ, the owner, is there. She decides on what is good and that becomes the specials. I have had trout that she got from her friend in nearby Spearfish, the lamb comes from Wyoming, beef is local. My favorite dessert is the butterscotch pot de creme and MJ makes all the desserts.
You will be surprised that at Rushmore the food at the dining hall is edible and pretty good. I like the pot roast. You must get ice cream there, it is the best. Everyone does.

Since we have moved away a couple months ago, I do miss these places

        1. Tally's in downtown Rapid City is also a good choice. They have the best coffee I've ever had. It's across the street from the hotel Alex Johnson.

          1. I loved the impromptu wine tasting at Prairie Berry Winery. Good, knowledgeable people and a great place to grab a sandwich. More gourmet than one would expect in the Hills.

As I recall, there's a Kangaroo ranch up the road from them. Kind of fun to visit the baby 'roos and visit them up close and personal.
