I love hanging out in the lobby of the Ace Hotel with some delicious coffee from Stumptown. It's kinda close to Midtown.

Both Ost Cafe and Mudspot in the East Village have lots of seating, and neither rushes you at all. However, no big and comfy chairs. Ost Cafe feels more open. Mudspot has more of a granola crunchy vibe.

Hudson Hotel - many comfy chairs and couches near the reception area and also in the library bar. The garden should be open also.

Go to Think! Coffee on Bowery, get some coffee, walk across the street and sit in the lobby of the Bowery Hotel, which is one of the coziest spots in town. No one will bother you. (I realize this isn't in the Village, but it's close.)

It's nice and it does have couches, but it is always super-duper-duper crowded.

Try Caffe Dante, if you want somewhere a little quieter/less bother (but without nice chairs) or maybe even someplace small like Local over right under Houston.

Sorry, but it's hard to think of places with comfy chairs... most places in NY want you out the door quick nowadays.

I've been there 15 times and it has never been crowded. If she's looking for comfy chairs, I would think it would be hard to do better than the Bowery Hotel lobby. Also, in the summer, there's the outdoor patio seating, so it's less likely the lobby area will be crowded.
