Dining Suggestions Near Saranac Lake

My family is heading to Saranac Lake for a week at the beginning of August. We have a 2 year old (fairly well-behaved) daughter, and we don't eat meat or shellfish. Any suggestions for eateries for any time of day would be great - both in Saranac Lake or Lake Placid, or if anyone has suggestions for places to go for day trips, that would be appreciated as well!

  1. Your best bet is to check the most recently active Lake Placid threads; not much going on in Saranac Lake, though I can say that either McKenzies (I think that's the name) right outside the Best Western is decent for breakfast, and we love the Blue Moon in town in the morning, too. There are a lot of not very old reccos on the LP threads, which you'll find in the old Tri State archives.

    1. You should check out Eat 'n Meet, a very small, very casual restaurant with very good food. Otherwise, Saranac Lake restaurants don't offer much in the way of interesting eating, though there are a few places with some character and color (Belvedere, Casa del Sol...).

another vote for eat n' meet. The food is localy sourced whenever possible, reasonably priced and very, very tasty.

      2. I don't eat meat either and I hated Eat N' Meat. All of their food was cooked on the same grill with raw meat. Everything looked kind of dirty and the staff did not look like they wanted to be there.
Little Italy is a great little Italian place with the best pizza. If you care about animal rennet in cheese, we asked and their cheese is vegetarian.
Finally, I love Left Bank Cafe (French). They just opened and are adding one thing to their menu each day. Actually last time I was there, they did not have a menu and the waitress just told you the four things they had, crepes (with a wide selection of some-what sweet fillings, a open-faced ham sandwich with fresh greens, some salmon dish, and a open-faced goat cheese (vegetarian) with tomatoes, onions, and chives with fresh greens. The owner told me I was the first one to order the goat cheese sandwich. It was amazing! They have great views of a little stream. It is the best food I have had in the Adirondacks. And their ice cream is really good too.
If you are talking about ice cream you have to go to Donnelly's Ice cream. It is the best ice cream in the world. Each day they have a special flavor twisted with vanilla ice cream. You cannot get any other flavor but trust me, you will love it.

          1. We ate at Blue Moon Cafe on Saturday night, and we really enjoyed it. The cheese plate was a treat, with a nice selection of local and non-local cheeses, fruit, and greens, but it was $18 for a 2 person plate, which I thought was a little high (but worth it). For entrees, I had the seafood quesadilla, very tasty, and my husband had a pasta special, which he really enjoyed. Unfortunately, it was VERY warm in the restaurant, which detracted somewhat from our experience. We also got 2 pieces of blueberry crumb cake to go, but when we ate it the next morning, it was stale and somewhat bland. I would go back though, maybe on a cooler day - and skip dessert!
