New Covent Garden market query

I am cooking for 15-20 for the World Cup on Friday and want to fill the house with flowers and serve strawberries and cream.

Has anyone been to NCG market, and is it worth going for what will be a crate of strawberries and a few big bunches of flowers? Is the produce really top-notch, and can a member of the public like me still buy from all of the stalls?

Also the website says it is open till 11am but should one get there market-early ie 6ish to get the good stuff?

Really what I am asking, is should I just go to Waitrose instead...

Many thanks

  1. go around seven, walk down buyers walk, purchase the nicest looking strawberries for cheap, profit. Then go steal flowers from the bins.

Thanks, excellent advice... Are the bins obvious and does anyone care/ notice?

Thanks, went at 6.30am this morning, and rather like a trip to Ikea, came away with far more than I went in for. Now the proud owner of 9 kilos of peas, among other things... no flowers in bins though but peonies far cheaper than at the florist.

How did you get all that home??

I drove. I live in Pimlico so it's a short hop across the river. £4 to get in with a car, otherwise free. For flowers, I will go on foot next time; only really worth buying all the produce if you're catering for the masses.

I'm glad it all worked out for you!
