Johnny G's - Cabbagetown

Has anyone recently been to Johnny G's on Parliament St in Cabbagetown?

Is it Ok? I know that it's not going to be top end cuisine, but is it decent? Or horrid?

I've recently moved into the Cabbagetown hood and I'm looking for decent places to add to our regular rotation of weeknight eating. We eat out way more than we should, 3 - 6 nights a week and it would be nice to find a decent place for 'diner' type food.
Currently we've been eating a lot at Sukhothai (yum!), Ginger, and Rashnaa. Other places we should consider?

Thanks!

  1. I actually don't mind it too much for brunch, but it's pretty much a greasy spoon joint. Might I suggest Big Mama's Boy. They do good pizza (Haven't tried much else because DH likes their pizza too much).

    1. Hey cubmike74! Go directly to Cranberries on Parliament just south of Wellesley on the east side. It's like a diner and your mom's cooking all in one. Wings - yum! Sweet potato fries? The best in the area hands down. Amazing soups. Great Steak and Caesar combo on Wednesday nights for 10.99 I think. Casesar is amazing - no f-acon, just the real pig deal. Tonight it's spaghetti. All pastas are great and the chicken parmesan is fantastic value, delish and fills you up.

My husband and I practically live there. Last night we tried the new addition to the dessert menu. OMG! This amazing almost gingerbread like carrot cake, moister than you can imagine and swirled with cream cheese INSIDE the thing. My so called non-dessert eating friends attacked it with relish. I barely got my fix met.

I'll have to try Cranberries - I haven't been there yet, but it sounds like my type of place!

      2. House On Parliament is IMO the best pub in Cabbagetown, with good food as well. It's received very positive reviews in the press. If you are eating out up to 6 nights a week I'm sure you will check it out soon, if you haven't already.

        1. Welcome to the neighbourhood. You're off to a good start with Sukho Thai and Rashnaa.

Mitzimouse is absolutely correct. Cranberries is diner food at incredibly low prices. While I wouldn't echo "amazing", I'd say it's excellent value.

Just south of Cranberries is Absolute Bakery which isn't exactly in Fred's Breads league, but is a pretty good little neighbourhood bakery nonetheless.

If you want an alternative to dining out, my quicky dinner solution is to pick up sides and app's (and dessert if you please) from Daniel et Daniel on Carlton just west of Parliament then head on up to St Jamestown Steak and Chops at Parliament and Winchester for meat or seafood. Mark, the owner/butcher is a real doll. Such a nice guy. You can make a restaurant quality meal at home in minutes this way.

Across the street from D&D is Omi. If you have a big budget night I highly recommend going omakase there. You can still do quite nicely for less money ordering a la carte.

And don't forget you've moved just that little bit closer to Weezie's. It's without a doubt the very best bang for the buck place in the area. Constance, the chef, is also quite a doll. A real sweetie.

For drinks in the neighbourhood you can go laid back at shabby-chic The Cobourg or pick up the vibe at the sexy, sexy Samovar. The Cobourg is an excellent way to get to know your neighbours.

As for pizza, I'd recommend going a little farther afield and trying the incredibly delicious selections offered at Fusilli at Queen & River. Look at it this way: You'll get a pizza twice as good as Big Mamma's Boy for half the price. You can use the savings for your cab fare home.

You will eventually end up at House On Parliament. We all do. Personally, I won't put up with the poor and surly service. They're very nice to regulars, but to newbies they practically eat their young. Soooo not worth it.

While I'm at the negatives, I'd rather eat in a toilet than Johnny G's.

          Have I missed anything?

          1. re: Googs

Thanks very much for all the info Googs!
I have been to House on Parliament - once only so far. It was packed, the service was just ok, and I thought the food was decent. I'm really not a fan of packed places / watering holes with surly staff. Not my thing. But the food was decent so maybe I need to go when it's less busy.
I've stoped into Daniel et Daniel and the sides and desserts do look amazing - I will have to try them soon.

Weezie's and Fusili I need to try. Funny thing is we were out the other night looking for somewhere to eat, walked down to Queen, walked east a few blocks but couldn't see anything. We ended up at the greek fast food place at the corner of Queen and Parliament. We should have kept going and we would have made it to Fusili.

            1. re: cubmike74

I also live in the area and have tried several of the places mentioned. Would definitely rec. Cranberries. I have been there several times and mostly had the soup which is always good. Yesterday I had the chicken souvlaki and greek salad which was great - $7.99. The server during the day Mena is hysterical and knows all the regulars by name. Also would 2nd St James Chop and Steak.

If you want suggestions for oft-overlooked food shops, just let me know. Again, welcome!

              2. re: Googs

Probably being a total dunce, but I can't find opening hours for Omi anywhere and just wanted to know if they're open for weekend lunches. It's directly across from my hair stylist and we stopped in for a weekday lunch a few months back and had the freshest sushi I've ever tasted! But last time I was in the neighbourhood (a Saturday), Omi looked like it was closed, and I couldn't find a sign or anything near the door.

If anyone has info on this, it would be much appreciated!!
