RIP: Lag's Eatery, Homewood Alabama
Ran into a friendly couple out here in Austin a couple days ago who informed me the iconic Lag's of Homewood has shuttered.

One of the Birmingham area's best spots for 30+ years is no more.

It's been shut down a few months. A couple took it over. Frankly, I never understood the allure of Lag's, except in the same context that the Varisty was esteemed in Atlanta, where I grew up.

re: Big Daddy
Big Daddy, I agree with you. I have some family members who had breakfast there once a week for years but I never could get into it. The gentleman who ran the restaurant was super-super nice though. I hope he's okay.
I think there's a catering company in that space now.
(Have to mention, too: the antique shop a few doors down is fantastic.)

re: deepfriedkudzu
I never dined at Lag's under the new-ish owner but the old couple that ran the place were a pair of gems. Walking in you were always warmly greeted and the aroma of frying potatoes, burgers on the griddle and sizzling bacon always set my mouth to watering.
For five or so dollars you were fed well, treated like a favored cousin and had the opportunity to have a glimpse at old Birmingham. When towns lose place like Lag's, Jelly's, Woolworths etc we lose more than just the delicious, cheap food. We lose a window to another era.
