Delmy's pupusas are manna from Central America...Once even on a Sunday I trod through the Hollywood market a bit hungover and without appetite, but I noticed that for the first time EVER there was no line at Delmy's--and I felt I had to get a pupusa, just 'cause. God these are great. It's no wonder it's the most popular stall in the market. I know she has a little restaurant but it's far afield. Unfortunately, other pupusas I've tried are like a totally different food item, so rotten that I've gotten sort of gun shy. Is there any place east of La Brea ('cause I know some folks get fussy when Silverlake and environs is referred to as the Eastside...) where one can get a pupusa comparable to the beloved Delmy's? And now of course that I've posted this the line on Sunday will be even longer...

I feel ya', Slow Foodie. Many foggy, achy Sunday mornings were made slightly more tolerable with them great Hwood FM pupusas.

In Silverlake, recently enjoyed a couple of pupusas at RINCON SALVADORENA, a hot, sweaty hole in the wall near Cirxa on Sunset. Cheap as all get out ($1.50 a pop). Good loroco and chicharron pupusas. Lotsa fresh made juices. Maybe not the equivalent of Delmy's, but does the trick.

Also have heard good things about ATLACATL (more of a full service restaurant, I believe), but have not sampled 'em meself.

I love Atlacatl. They also offer a rice pupusa, which (on the menu) sounds like it's stuffed with rice, but actually the dough is a rice dough, and you can get it with any of their regular fillings. I don't know if that's typical or not, but it's really good, kind of gets a bit more crisp on the outside than the regular masa.

Other things I really like at Atlacatl are the Fried Bananas served with black beans and crema, if you've never sampled this combination, it's really fantastic.

The slaw they serve at Atlacatl is really good also. They give you a huge jar on the table for you to take as much as you'd like.

And oddly enough, they make one hell of a turkey sandwich. This is not your ordinary american turkey sandwich, this resembles more of a stuffed potato than a sandwich. It's also called pan con pavo, which means bread and turkey, which had it not been recommended by a friend, I would never have ordered. A huge roll is split open on top, like a baked potato (no potato involved, just to clarify), then stuffed with chunks of very juicy turkey meat, lettuce, a little mayo, and whatever delicious marinade the turkey has. Really a delicious, eat it with a knife and fork, sandwich.

I had them for the first time last Sunday and they were very, very good. I had one flor de calabaza and one revueltas. Manna, indeed. I'll be back, best pupusas I've had in L.A.
