Recs near Rice Park

My Boston friends and I will be visiting St. Paul for a weekend in July to celebrate a dear friend's wedding. I have read a lot of the "must-try" threads, but I am wondering which recommendations are in the vicinity (and preferably walking distance) of Rice Park, where we are staying. We are mostly interested in good drinks and small plates, but we might have time for a high-end meal as well. The farmer's market and Mill CIty museum also sound great...is this do-able?

Thanks in advance!

Yep. I'd recommend Meritage, followed by Meritage, with an honorable mention for Meritage! Nice cocktails, delicious food (higher end, but not super pricey, and with some more reasonable options like one of the best burgers in town for like 12 bucks), charming environment.

And the farmer's market. Can get some good nibbles there too-- gelato often, various cheese samples, yummy spring rolls and egg rolls....

And possibly Tanpopo, for delicious noodle soups.

    2. If you're staying near Rice Park, I have to assume it's at the St. Paul Hotel, which has a fantastic restaurant and bar inside.

      St. Paul Grill (fine dining)
      Fuji-Ya (sushi)
      Sakura (sushi)
The Bulldog Lowertown (American / bar)
Senor Wong (odd Asian / Mexican fusion, but good).
      Pazzaluna (Italian)

The Mill City Museum is in Minneapolis, it's not walking distance from Rice Park. The St. Paul Farmers market is about 8 blocks from Rice Park in Lowertown.

Just up the hill out of downtown St. Paul on Selby are W. A. Frost, The Muddy Pig, and The Happy Gnome, to name a few. It's walking distance, but the 21 bus run past Rice Park up there every 10 - 15 minutes.

      1. I'll third Meritage and the Farmers Market, both very pleasant options. I've also enjoyed the small plates at Barrio, though I've found the drinks to be hit or miss. It may be that I had a hit or miss bartender the night I was there.

        1. Meritage deserves the repeated recommendations and is probably 50 yards from the NE corner of Rice Park.

The St. Paul Grill in the St. Paul Hotel is good, though is more of a steakhouse-style meal than small plates. They pride themselves on their liquor selection.

The Strip Club is not walking distance, but it is just up the hill from downtown. As you can see on their web site (www.domeats.com) they have many small plates options and the drinks are excellent (even for a very, very infrequent alcohol drinker like myself).

I love Tanpopo, but it may not appeal to a broad audience. I also don't have any idea re: drinks. www.tanpoporestaurant.com
