Care and handling of Kewpie Mayonnaise

Midlife Jun 14, 2010 05:33 PM

So I was at the Japanese market the other day and came across a display of Kewpie Mayonnaise. Having remembered posts here about it's unique taste and remembering that style from some past Japanese restaurant meals, I bought some. (I only saw one size on the shelf.)

Now that I've got it home I see that the package says it should be consumed within 30 days of opening. I would assume that has to do with it being made without the preservatives of a typical Hellman's Best Foods. Anyway............... my question is about whether that is a hard and fast rule from the knowledge or experience of those here. I don't use that much mayo and want to know if I can stretch that timing if I need to, without paying an uncomfortable price.

My guess for Kewpie would be between three and six months, in the refrigerator. It's quite a durable product, and doesn't seem to go bad quickly. I think the "30 days" designation is to accelerate consumption, myself. But YMMV, and keep a close eye on it after the first month.

I have a bottle of QP that's been in the fridge for like 9 months...still tastes fine to me.

I have a bottle that I'd guess is nearly 2 years old, I just had some tonight and it tasted fine.

In the fridge, it'll last as long as your typical Hellman's.

Thanks folks. I've opened the package and will refrigerate worry-free 'til gone or icky-looking/smelling/tasting.
