Chinese takeout for tonight in south Etobicoke or east Mississauga

Is there a decent Chinese restaurant in south Etobicoke or southeast Mississauga or even southwest Toronto (e.g. Roncesvalles or Parkdale) that offers tasty Chinese food? Please don't say Grand. One person is craving "Canadian" Chinese food (e.g. eggrolls, chicken balls) and the other is interested in real Chinese food (wok fried rice, slightly authentic flavours). Not interested in other Asian cuisines. Thank you!

  1. We go to Mai Mai Restaurant on Lakeshore for our chinese fix. Located a couple of blocks west of Kipling on Lakeshore. Hole in the wall family run chinese restaurant. Also we find the prices to be really good.

Be interested to hear where others get their chinese food fix in that area.

With all due respect, camp1980, Mai Mai was the worst Chinese food I've had in years. We just finished a meal of Mai Mai eggrolls (average), regular eggrolls (strangely pink inedible filling), sweet and sour pork (yuck), szechwan chicken with peanuts (mono-hot flavour; no layers of flavour or peppercorns, but this was the best dish of the order), completely inedible soft noodles with strangely absent bbq pork (huge waste of money), and hopeless special fried rice. Really a huge waste of $45. Even my non-chowhound companion hated the food and wished we had gone to Mississauga for chinatown fare.

I would definitely be interested to hear where others get their chinese food fix in Mimico/New Toronto and nearby.

Have to agree with Food Tourist on this one. You'd be better off going somewhere like the Hong Kong Garden up at Bloor & Royal York for Canadian style Chinese.

Ewww. Hong Kong Garden is gross.
It's just as bad as Mai Mai sounds. Poor quality food.

I only ever had the hot & sour soup from there and it was alright though I've had better so okay-I'll take your word for it.

Wow...Mai Mai. Well hole in the wall if a great discription. I lived in that area for over ten years and stepped in there once and that was it for me.....never went back and it was just a few blocks away. It's interesting how our taste buds can be so different, although I guess that's what makes it such a fun adventure to try places on other peoples recommendations.
When I was younger, there was a place called Flower Drum in Mimico and they had the best food, but they've been gone years now.
Now in Mississauga, we've tried The Wokker on Lakeshore Road, near Mississauga Road, however still searching for a better one in southwest Mississauga.

I don't know if it's the same people, but there's a New Flower Drum in Mimico now. I have ordered a few times from them. For the area, it's definitely one of the better ones I've had.

I haven't found anything for Chinese to compare to the downtown restaurants since I've moved to the area though. I tend to order more Thai now since there are quite a few good places.

          1. re: FrenchSoda

Which Thai is your favourite? What do you order at New Flower Drum?

            1. re: Food Tourist

For Thai I like Siam Princess (soo many options and lovely staff as well) and Fresh Rolls in the Queensway mall, though they don't deliver. I love the veggie fresh rolls and fried spinach dishes there.

Sorry, I don't remember any specific dishes jumping out from New Flower Drum, just that IMHO it's in general a step above the other local choices. I miss all the delivery choices from downtown! Oh Spadina Garden and your spicy peanut chicken.

I had heard from a colleague about Flower Drum but the one time I peeked inside 2 years ago, it didn't seem like a chinese restaurant, just a local bar.

        2. Fu Lai is OK for classic Canadian Chinese Food. It's around Six Points, 3858 Bloor Street West near Kipling.
