Clinton Hill Take-out?

jlclaire Jun 14, 2010 07:07 AM

Former Brooklynite (now in L.A.) here housesitting in Clinton Hill for a few days. We have young children and prefer to do take-out if possible. Anything yummy near Clifton and St. James? Mostly looking for dinner, but lunch ideas also would be helpful.

pilar is a very good Cuban restaurant that delivers..

Kingfish escibeche is really good and awesome Mofongo from El Cofre.. They deliver too..

    Sushi D is pretty decent..

Smoke Joint has good food.. Very slow so, don't be in a rush..

I really like the food at Umi Nom.. For lunch try their burger or the pork belly sandwich.. Both are great..

Choice on Grand and Lafayette has good veggie burger.. Though, they are way too avacado happy.. Which is great if you like that..

I would tell you to take a mile long walk to Mitchells.. It's up vanderbilt.. Amazing fried chicken..

    Good luck..

Der Shvartz Kolener has an amazing cheese plate with pickles, a roll from Germany, all for 4 bucks.. Really good German Beer Selection.. Plus 6 dollar brats.. Go check it out.. watch some soccer.

100% cosign on Pilar and Umi Nom - not sure how I neglected to include these.

Choice Greene is primarily known for breads and charcuterie, but they also have a good pre-prepared sushi selection. The fish monger there is super friendly and will also make stuff on request.

If you're into pub food, there is a place called Rustik that delivers and has excellent wings. Three Luigis pizza (NY slice place) is on Grand Ave. b/t Lafayette and Clifton and is one of my go-to places. I thought I read that Speakeasy (Waverly and Greene) delivers but I've only eaten at their restaurant so can't comment. Zaytoons (Middle Eastern) is good and delivers. I've tried a few different Thai places that are all of comparable quality. If you like Mexican (although I'm sure you have no shortage of great Mexican in LA), check Castros - they probably deliver.

I happen to think Castro's is terrible Mexican Food..

Two places that are better in the area, though, not really that great are taqueria Tepango and Chinantla
