ISO sugar-free ice cream/gelato

maxzook Jun 13, 2010 02:48 PM

Yesterday, for the first time in a long while, I ate something that literally brought tears to my eyes.

As a type II diabetic with weight issues, I had long ago assumed that ice cream and gelato were never-agains for me. I had tried supermarket sugar-free ice cream (Breyer's, I think) but it was so artificial and boring didn't even finish the container. Same thing with Baskin-Robbins, which I've always hated anyway.

Yesterday, I had a double cup of sugar-free chocolate/sugar-free chocolate hazelnut at Piccomolo in Old Town Pasadena. Pure heaven -- I truly could not tell the difference from sugared gelato (I tested myself a couple of hours later, just in case I had warped into the frozen yogurt episode of Seinfeld.)

Does anyone have any suggestion for gelatos or ice dreams that fit my needs? It has to be honest-to-God sugar-free (not just "naturally sweetened"), and preferably as low fat as possible.

And it just occurred to me, I forgot to ask the Piccomolo people if they ever have any other sugar-free flavors. I'm especially looking for vanilla and (sigh) pistachio.

Thanks in advance!
