Chengdu Heaven - EWWW EWWW that smell!

The food is great, but the smell? Forget it. That area down there in the Golden Mall has a SERIOUS problem with odor. I am convinced it is BO. It smells like a homeless person sleeps at the bottom of the stairs next to Chengdu Heaven. The smell is so obnoxious that it is impossible to enjoy the meal. I now get my Sichuan thrill at Little Pepper. Any else noticed it lately?

  1. It's not noticeable unless you're on the stairs and the reason for it is that all of the businesses pile their garbage there before it's taken out.

    1. I'm pretty sure that the "bulk" of the smell is from stinky tofu, probably sold at the Taiwanese place just down the stairs. That said, the garbage that's left on the stairs doesn't help. If you go a bit further in there is NO awful odor.

      1. It's been addressed before, and yes, it's stinky tofu. For what it's worth, I think it lends an air of authenticity.

If ya wanna eat the real deal, then you gotta go through the real deal. No hanging fern plants, exposed brick or old fashioned filament blulbs here. Just the real deal. King Yum is about a 15 minute drive away.....

I wanted the real Sichuan deal, not the real Taiwanese deal. I can get that at Little Pepper without the smell of stinky tofu. You don't have to like everything about authentic cuisine to say that you enjoy authentic cuisine. Even Andrew Zimmern spits stuff out that he doesn't like. And just because someone doesn't like the smell of stinky tofu doesn't make them a Kim Yum troglodite. But thanks for your input.

Sorry If I came off snippy. I grew up right by KY so I'm also making a wayinside joke. The smell is awful but...if you go right past the first stall it goes away. I've never smelt it by the Xi'an place and I have actually been invited to move my table awayf rom the stinky tofu @ Spicy N Tasty so I feel your pain.

Yes, but that's because Andrew Zimmern is not actually an adventurous eater; he's just some random who goes about labeling completely normal dishes from all sorts of places "weird" for a TV audience.

Stinky dofu it is! I didn't notice it at all last time I was there though. Odd... The stuff used to kill me in China, but I got pretty used to it. The old Roosevelt Avenue mall had a pretty intense stinky dofu smell at the entrance.
