Best Tuna Tartare

My friend loves tuna tartare and wanted recommendations of where the best is served.

Check out the Guilt Restaurant bar food menu at the Palace Hotel at Madison & 50th. Amazing yellow fin tuna tartare! Also love the truffle fries. The marvelous patio is the place to enjoy their limited but delicious bar menu. The Guilt bar inside the hotel however, is a real bore - dumb pounding muzak, an underwhelming, ridiculous geometrical set piece and buzz-kill blue lighting clash big-time with the otherwise very beautiful, original historic room.

I'm not a huge tuna tartare person, but my SO and I love the ones we've gotten at Alta and Calle Ocho. We've ordered them both multiple times.

I LOVE tuna tartare and have had it all over the city, including many of the places people have mentioned like Nougatine, Gotham, the Modern, and Daniel...not room service though. Out of all of those, the most memorable by far is Gotham. The portion is gigantic, and it has a subtle asian inspiration with really thinly sliced cucumbers that let the flavor of the tuna really shine through. It's simple, cracked pepper and coarse salt, and DELICIOUS. We go there specifically for the tuna tartare because we're not the biggest fans of the main courses on the menu. The tartare at Nougatine was good but standard and once we got it still frozen on the inside, the tartare at David was also good but I think we got it as part of the tasting menu so it was really expensive, and the Modern was good, but I didn't like the celery they had on the bottom...it kind of gave it a bland flavor overall. Go with Gotham!!!

i still think about that tartare at Gotham all the time, and had it a year ago! it really is sublime.

I have eaten so many wonderful tuna tartar's in NYC, but one stands out. Daniel....the tuna is so decadent, wrapped by a cucumber slice and topped with caviar...OMG!

The tuna tartare at the Modern Bar Room is delicious.

I second the Upside Down Tuna Tarte at the Modern Bar Room. I had it this past Monday and it was fabulous. Great contrast of the brittle, slightly sweet pastry on top, the Japanese cucumber and the aioli sauce. The portion size was fairly substantial with plenty of beautiful red tuna cubes.

You will not believe me, but there is a Thai restaurant...one in Hell's Kitchen and one in Chelsea....that has the BEST tuna tartare I have ever had. OMG!

my best guess is Room Service - there are locations in HK & Chelsea, and they have tuna tartare on the menu...though it would be helpful to get confirmation from chowsue.

Room Service it is - it's on 9th avenue between 47th & 48th Street. The tuna tartare is fantastic! Also, for an app, the portion is large enough to share. Delish!

This is my favorite in the city, actually, or at least was when I had it 3 years ago.

I second Nougatine (casual side of Jean George). The quality, portion and taste are all solid. Another one I had recently at Punch, by Union Square, was also quite good; nice, bright yuzu dressing.
