ESPN World Cup Match Truck catered by Roy Choi and the Kogi staff
In honor of the World Cup, ESPN is launching a food truck equipped with LCD TV screens to show the games. Roy Choi of Kogi fame has created a menu inspired by some of the countries/teams participating. There will be trucks in L.A. and NY.
I was lucky enough to get a preview yesterday, however, they only had three items available for tasting.
CARNE ASADA BURRITO $5
SKIRT AND FLANK STEAK MARINATED IN LIME, GARLIC, CILANTRO AND BEER SERVED WITH PINTO BEANS AND A TOMATILLO-BASED SALSA VERDE
It was a traditional Mexican-style burrito. Certainly spiced well and fragrant with good chunks of beef. It seemed to be missing a bit something because I think I was expecting the flavors of the traditional Kogi burrito. The chunks of beef were a bit overcooked and chewy. The salsa verde was quite nice, but there were a lot of beans which overpowered most of the other ingredients.
MINI HAMBURGERS WITH KOGI KETCHUP (2 PER ORDER)
Beef sliders served on the sweet Hawaiian rolls with shredded cheese and the Kogi ketchup. The beef patties were charred well, but a bit overcooked. The ketchup had a creeping kick probably from the siracha that spiked it. But the nice sweetness from the Hawaiian roll was great.
LAMB GYRO $6
IN A PITA, PICKLED ONIONS, GREENS, “GUTTER-STYLE” TZATZIKI SAUCE
Easily the best of the three items sampled. Gyro was fabulous and flavorful. The pickled onion gave it a nice vinegary crunch. The greens (spinach) and tomatoes added freshness. And that gutter-style tzatziki was amazing. I've no idea what exactly was in it, but it pulled everything together. I could have eaten two of those and would have been quite happy.
Service was fast (if you were close to the front of the line), and the food was quite tasty. Worth a try to celebrate the 2010 FIFA World Cup if you happen to be close to the neighborhood where the trucks will be parked. A tentative schedule is posted at http://espnwctrucks.com/LA and there will be an updated Twitter feed at ESPNWCTruckLA for more accurate locations.
I don't have access to my photos, but will post them later this evening.
