Spotted Pig

More of a query.
Live in the neighborhood and drop in once and a while for a hamburger.
Ordered one, and asked for a glass of "cab". Didn't ask for and wasn't offered wine list.
Assumed mid-range.
Got ok glass of red. $17 on the bill. Same cost as the hamburger.

The pig is relatively pricey- but was the waiter being a wiseguy?

        While charging $17 for a glass of wine is not necessarily ridiculous, if that is the only cabernet on the wine list, then I am sure that this is not the first time that someone felt burned when they just asked for a glass of cab. While it is incumbent upon the customer to look at the prices, an excellent server will try to discover whether the customer understands if they are ordering such an expensive glass of wine, or whether they are ordering the glass of cab because they assume it will be a moderately priced wine.

      2. If you look at their website, a $17 cab is more or less in line with their (totally out of line!) prices by the glass.

        I certainly wouldn't say that the waiter screwed you over on that. More like the mgmt who decided it was okay to charge that price. I know a lot of places make the argument that using high quality ingredients necessarily increases the price. But, for instance, they charge $3 per oyster. Really?! It's an oyster.

        The the OP: Sorry you felt ripped off. I would too. But it wasn't just the wine. I think the whole place is more expensive than it should be. When it comes to ordering blindly though, as always, "caveat emptor."

          No - the price is exactly right, given that this is a restaurant in New York. The standard calculation for wine by the glass is retail multiplied by three, divided by five. This is a $30 bottle, so there is no rip off.

          Not, that is, unless you consider wine prices charged by New York restaurants across the board a rip-off. Arguably they are, but something has to be a profit center, and in this city it's the booze rather than the grub. But there's no reason to pick on Spotted Pig.

          You might argue that Spotted Pig should have cheaper reds by the glass. Well, it does. Should it have a Cabernet, $20 retail? Cabernet is expensive. If I was a server and found customers regularly disgruntled by this, I'd make a habit of showing them the list so they could see what they ordered. Probably doesn't happen much though. I should say average price for a glass of wine in a well-known, hip downtown restaurant is - what? - $12 to $14, so we aren't talking about a huge leap here.

          I know this will be unpopular, but I think it's fair comment.

            I take your point about the wine calculation. I guess my feelings about wine by the glass are that they are typically less expensive, and the Spotted Pig does have a few in the lower range.

            But $9 for a pint of Guinness? I know it's a hip downtown restaurant, it's wildly popular, etc. But it feels a bit like everything is a "profit center" by a dollar or two. No, none of them are huge leaps. But they do add up to a meal that winds up feeling more expensive than it should have been.

            I have nothing against Spotted Pig. Their food is good, but usually I only go there if someone else really wants to go.

            To be fair to The Spotted Pig's menu pricing- don't forget they have their own forager! Every ingredient they use from the olive oil they sautee with to the vegetables that their forager brings them to the meat from high-end farms is the best. Yes, it feels odd to drop money and not get fussed over, but that's the whole point of a pub- you don't need white table clothes to eat good food there. I agree the front of house staff could be a bit friendlier.

            RE: OP- Always look before you leap with wine. What's counterintuitive is that it's usually places without a long wine list where you'll get gouged.

          3. If you'd asked for a glass of red wine, and they'd charged you $17 for the glass they gave you when there were other (cheaper) glasses available, that's wrong.
            But you asked for a Cab, which implies Cabernet Sauvignon. You asked, they gave it to you, they charged you for it. Their Cab costs $17. You could have easily asked for a wine list and chosen a cheaper glass of wine. But when one asks for a Cabernet, they want a Cabernet; just as when one asks for a burger, they want a burger. If you merely wanted a full bodied glass of cheaper red wine, you should have asked; I am sure they would have brought you one.
