Sukhothai Uptown

Sukhothai recently opened an Uptown branch, on Magazine St. in what used to be Savvy Gourmet. We had an early dinner there last night, and it was pretty much exactly like the Royal St. location except the space is larger and more modern. We had green curry and drunken noodles, both of which were good. They did not charge extra for rice. I mention this because the other location had adopted that policy the last time I was there, which I was ridiculous. In fact, they not only did not charge extra for rice, but they brought more out with the go boxes so we'd have enough for today's lunch, which was a very nice touch.

There's not much going on in the way of decor, but the bamboo tabletops are very pretty. There were only two other tables occupied when we were there, which was noticeable in this very large space.

  1. I've been wondering how the uptown branch was. Sounds like it's worth trying.

    1. yeah the upcharge on rice at the marigny location is absurd. curry w/o rice is soup. i wrote the owner about it, he claimed there was some rice shortage and since nobody eats it anyway he was going to charge. pfft.

Yeah, I havn't gone back to the Marigny location since the start of upcharge, and I made sure to ask before we ordered the other night. I don' t know if the Marigny location still has that policy though.

      2. I went last night with a group of ab 12 and it was a great place for a bday gathering of that size bc they had a table large enough to accomodate us all and it's BYOB ,,, so we were able to to eat, drink, pay for birthday girl all at a reasonable price...

I still haven't found decent Thai here, and this place hasn't changed that. Curries are one-note and uninteresting, vegetables are cut in those silly shapes and taste like they were frozen. Boring.

            Singha on Poydras is good
I also really enjoy LA Thai - the menu is a bit fused and not completely straight thai, but their green curry is awesome as is the sweet and sour soup and beef salad. I am also a sucker for their pad woo sen

I don't really see anything special about Singha (it's on Carondelet, just off Poydras). I go there for lunch sometimes but I prefer Sukhothai. Siamese on Vets is my favorite, but it's kind of a hike for me.

i know the Marigny location is BYOB, but is the uptown as well? no bar?

            1. re: kibbles

No bar. I would have thought they'd have a liquor license since Savvy Gourmet did, but I don't claim to understand the rules surrounding that issue.

              1. re: uptownlibrarian

that is odd - longtime residents have always said it's the building address that determines liquor license availability and this is why the marigny location cannot. tho I'm sure there are further complications.

Sometimes the application process takes a while, especially if there is a conditional use attached to it. At that location, the conditional use may have been that it had to sell other products in conjunction with the restaurant, kind of like the grocery conditional use at the former Cabana Grill.
