quiet Newton lunch

I am meeting an old friend for lunch in Newton next Wednesday. We are interested in decent food but more especially a quiet place where we can sit and talk for as long as we like. Any ideas in Newton Highlands/Newtonville/West Newton/Washington Street? Thanks.

I should have followed up earlier to say that we did meet at Lam's and it was perfect for our purposes: the food was fine and the staff were happy to clean around us while we sat and talked well into the afternoon.

I agree with Kouzina and Amarin, but another suggestion is Ariadne. I have found that Ariadne is a great place for lunch, very quiet, comfortable seating. Another place a bit farther is Stellina, particularly on a beautiful day when you can sit on the patio.

Ariadne will stop serving lunch as of June 16th through early September. Unfortunately, that's exactly the day of the OP's lunch date.

The Union Grill in Newton Centre has a nice outside patio and decent standard food choices:

Upstairs at the Union Grill is anything but quiet. Downstairs is pretty quiet. Amarin popped into my head, too.

You're right, I was mainly thinking of the patio in the afternoon - which is very pleasant on a nice day.

Kouzina might be a little out of the way, but it is a nice place in Waban (a village of Newton) for a quiet lunch. Sol Azteca in Newton Center serves lunch Wednesday - Friday and would be a good choice as well. Karoun is not open for lunch. Cabot's is my favorite place in Newton for lunch, but it might not exactly be quiet.

Really? What do you get for lunch at Cabot's? I've been going there for 35+ years (since I was 2!) but never for the food...

Peanut butter sauce and hot fudge brownie sundae - now that's a lunch.

                Exactly! That's my favorite sundae.

Lipoff, I'll have to try that sandwich sometime... I do love their fries.

I love their fries too! I'm almost embarrassed because it's obvious that they were once frozen fries. But they are so good.

I love their chicken salad sandwich --- toasted on wheat!

The Biltmore is a totally fine lunch spot, and you'll have plenty of peace if you sit in the tables (and not the bar).

Finally got over to the somewhat maligned Biltmore - I never got there before the present Gallows team was working there. I was really happy with the bar snacks I recently tried - hot ribs were three pork ribs with habanero BBQ sauce - really nice burn and a steal at $6. DC got bacon wrapped dates that looked great - again a steal at $5 or $6. For dinner, had an order of fried clams, which were mostly full bellies, over a pile of crunchy fries and some fried pickles - $12 and perfect to cool off the burn from the ribs. My DC got a catfish dinner that looked really unappetizing to me - bright red sauce - but he said it tasted great. Good service at the bar from Peter. If it were in my neighborhood, I would be there a lot more often.

If you like Thai, definitely go to Amarin in Newton Corner. Wonderful Thai food, great service, comfortable restaurant. They are great about lingering.

Not sure if they're open for lunch, but also check out Karoun on Washington Street. Delicious middle eastern.

Lams is pleasant and the service usually thoughtful. on washington street. if you'd like to go a bit farther afield, Blue Ginger in Wellesley on Washington serves lunch and is excellent.

I second Amarin. It's a lovely setting and nice and quiet. Food's wonderful and the staff couldn't be nicer.
