Short Paris trip report

I was in Paris for three nights in mid-May and stopped at a few places. Unfortunately, I was there over the Ascension holiday and several of my top choices were closed, but I still had a good time.

I had a quick dinner at Les Cocottes as I was dining alone and fighting jet lag. I arrived shortly after they opened and the place was packed within 15-20 minutes. I started with the simple pate that was hearty and delicious. For my main, I had the wood roasted pigeon which was beautifully cooked and satisfied my desire to have pigeon that had been building for awhile. I skipped dessert as I was afraid I'd fall asleep at the counter. Not a special meal, but the service was efficient and friendly and I enjoyed my meal.

The next day I had lunch at Table Eugene. I had dined here about a year before while on my honeymoon and we really loved the place. My lunch was as good or better than my previous visit. I had a starter of a foie gras ravioli and a main of duck that were both delicious and surprisingly refined. Dessert was the headliner for meal- a chocolate dessert that in which a cold vanilla ice cream was inside a chocolate shell and warm chocolate was poured over the top. The various textures and temperatures made a simple dessert really memorable. I still love the tiny dining room and I'll probably keep on my list for future visits.

For dinner that night, I had a quick meal at Les Fines Gueules. I had their charcuterie platter and a wonderful carrot soup. I wasn't in the mood for a big meal, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of this place and thought the food was perfectly simple.

My wife joined me for dinner the next night at Itineraires. I was ambivalent about going here as it was not my top choice, but it ended up being fine. I liked the feel of the dining room and it was packed all evening. I had a foie gras starter and a pork loin dish as my main and finished with a strawberry soup. All were fine, but not up to the level of Table Eugene. Service was fine, but a little slow at times. I doubt I'd return here as the food is only slightly above average, but I wasn't upset I gave it a try.

I also made a point to get coffee from Gocce di Cafe which was very good and much better than any of the other coffee I had during my time in Paris.

I also did the customary visits to Berthillon and Pierre Hermes which were still good, but I was disappointed that the salted caramel ice cream was not available on the day of my visit. I tried to stop by Gregory Renard to give his macarons a try, but he was closed for the duration of my visit because of the holiday.
