One night on Nantucket -- Oran Mor, American Seasons, Galley, or???

We have one night on nantucket in June and cannot decide on a restaurant. Ideally, we would want a taste of Nantucket, with fresh, seasonal seafood/proteins in a classic nantucket setting.

Not tied to the restaurants above, and price is not an object. Just looking for the best local seafood/produce/protein in an upscale (but not stuffy) atmosphere.

If you only had one night on Nantucket and wanted the best meal, where would you go? Not really interested in asian fusion, so The Pearl is probably out. And, while Toppers looks like fantastic atmosphere, I have read that the food has gone dramatically downhill.

Any and all recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks.

  1. Ciclista needs to chime in as she resides on island and works in a fine dining spot. Personally I would choose Oran Mor but will let my chow buddy speak...what wonderful choices..

I haven't been to Oran Mor yet this year, but it is a favorite. If I had only one night, and money was no object, I'd probably go to the Galley....if it's a nice night. The view cannot be beat. It's right on the beach. The food is very good, and you will pay for that view. The food is probably a bit better at Oran Mor or American Seasons, but once you throw in the beach setting, The Galley wins. Make sure to go while it's still light out.

I would go with Company of the Cauldron, Cinco, or the Galley. By the way, last I knew the chef now at Oran Mor was previously the head chef at Toppers when it was really good. His Foie Gras Torchon with Rhubarb-Pepper jam and toasted Portuguese Bread is amazing.

Since posting this I've spoken with the owner and she is such a gracious and nice person that I am going to give her restaurants another try. I really felt she cares and wants to constantly improve her restaurants and that is a cool thing. (I also posted this in another thread but felt it was importnat to repeat it evey where I mentioned my previous experience)

        2. Just returned from Nantucket and ended up having a few really good meals (and one pretty awful one). We ended up having two free nights and went to both Oran Mor and Galley Beach. We really enjoyed both -- for different reasons.

The food at Oran Mor was fantastic. Simply prepared, fresh ingredients and fantastic service. We loved the duck and scallop entrees, in particular. Also enjoyed the lobster and gnocchi starter. This was our favorite meal of the weekend.

Galley Beach was great for the views, and the food was not too shabby either. We went in time for the sunset, which was spectacular. The beachfront setting cannot be beat. Our favorites were the squab starter and the scallop main. I had a tuna entree special that was only ok.

We had considered Company of the Cauldron, but the night that we could go they were serving a beef entree and we were not in the mood for red meat. We will definitely check it out next time we are on the island, though, as it looked fantastic.

We also had a pre-planned group dinner at Corazon del Mar. I had no say in the choice of this restaurant, and would not return. While the atmosphere was nice enough, the only thing that I enjoyed was the dessert (tres leche). My chicken mole app and fish taco main were underwhelming and overpriced. The group consensus was that the meal was a big fail. With the many great restaurants on the island, people should not waste their time with this one.

Thanks to all for their recommendations.
