Whats your favorite ice cream place in the Bennington/Manchester area?

Vermont Country Store in Weston added on to their Bryant House restaurant this spring, and have just opened the attached dairy bar, which they have named Mildred's – in honor of Mildred Orton, who passed away a few weeks ago. They're serving Wilcox ice cream, which is sweetly appropriate: Mildred (wife of VCS founder Vrest Orton) was born Mildred Wilcox, of the Wilcox Dairy Wilcoxes.

I happen to like Wilcox ice cream. With so many gourmet brands running amok out there, Wilcox remains good old-fashioned ice cream. Their 'Sweet Cream' flavor is the essence of simplicity, and magically delicious.

I think the sad reason there are no replies is that there's no great ice cream in the area. As an addict if the stuff living just south of the region and traveling through often, I haven't found any ....but would love to!
The old Mother Myrick's had tolerable ice cream made much better by their hot fudge sauce.

What about Wilcox Dairy in Manchester...are they still around? I know they had a devistating fire a few years back but I thought they continued on withe the ice cream.

Wilcox's ice cream stand on Rt. 7A, as of last season, was selling Turkey Hill ice cream (or some other commercial brand) and the stand is now called "Silver Springs Scoops." There's a long family battle between the brothers and one runs the dairy and one runs the ice cream or something like that. I never could untangle the web of family drama there. Anyway, they also have an ice cream shop up in Manchester, next to the Northshire Bookstore, where I think they are selling Wilcox ice cream.

But, yes, there is an appalling lack of good ice cream here. The Vermont Confectionery in Bennington--on Rt. 9 west, heading out of Bennington towards NY-has a decent ice cream shop. Other than that, good luck.

Oh and Dutton Farm Stand in Manchester, on Rt. 11/30, sells maple creemees, which are pretty good.

Dukegirl-thanks for the update on Wilcox. That's too bad.
Thanks for the Dutton Farm Stand tip. I'll check it out next time I'm down there. I'm always up for a good creemee.

Well, to be fair, I don't know the current status of the ice cream stand on Rt. 7A-they may be selling their own ice cream this season. I'll have to do some research to find out! ;-) They do still sell Wilcox's packaged ice cream at local stores and supermarkets, though.

It's like soft-serve, usually maple flavored.

Not "like soft serve" it IS soft serve. :)

                  Love creemees!
