Why are 2 of the best restaurants on Hathworne closed?

  • 4

First Sel Gris (RIP), then Belly Timber. I'm so disappointed as Belly Timber was my favorite place for Sunday Brunch. Anything out there comparable for Sunday Brunch? I feel like I've lost a best friend. :(

  1. Castagna is one of the best places in town.
    Other not-miss: Apizza Scholls.
Bombay is overpriced for what you get, they are really full of themselves, and there is relentless upselling.
Division has a wealth of great places such as Lauro, Vindalho, Bar Avignon, that Italian takeout on 21st and Division, and Pok Pok.

Taste Unique is that awesome Italian take-out (open until 7pm), and they do great special dinner too, and you can eat-in (though there are only about 12 seats): http://www.tasteunique.com/

It's next to Tart, which has great frozen custard: http://tartpdx.com/

Simpatica and Accanto/Genoa (on Belmont) do higher end brunch and are not far away at all. Lots of folks like Broder on SE Clinton for brunch too, but I have never been. For an interesting brunch there is also Pambiche on Glisan off of 28th for a Desayuno Cubano.

And, with lines until 2pm, one of the most popular (and one of the best, there really is a reason for those lines) places for brunch is Screen Door on E B-side at 24th. It;' a great dinner choice, too...in fact I give the edge to dinner over brunch, but it is a close call.

For dinner: Laurelhurst Market, Nostrana, tabla, Simpatica on Fri and Sat, Castagna, Genoa, Spints, Beaker and Flask, Bamboo Sushi, Le Pigeon, biwa, Navarre, Noble Rot...many are my faves, some not, but all in all a lot of choices in SE (and the cusp of NE), all arguably walkable from the SE Hawthorne area.

    2. Yea, I was sad to see Sel Gris go as well. I'm hoping that Fin will hold it's own and be an adequate replacement. I am starting to think the location of Belly Timber (and its predecessor) is just a bad luck spot, though I couldn't exactly put my finger on the reason. But with all the other establishments mentioned by others here, SE still holds down the fort (imho) for the best food in town...

When I lived in Chicago, a friend of mine there called that concept, "The Corner of Death."
