Restaurants in Abruzzo

We will be in Abruzzo for three evenings in late July. We will be staying at Santo Stefano di
Sessanio in Sextantio and driving touring during the days. We will probably eat near the hotel in the evenings but are looking for great restaurants for lunch as well as things we should be seeing. We know nothing about Abruzzo other than that there was a terrible earthquake last April destroying much of L'Aquila. Because we have been all over the rest of Italy, we decided it was time to visit. We are not great beach people after having had Melanoma and other skin cancers but love fish so don't mind going there to eat. Also what about Sulmona and the parks? Can we easily drive around the province and see a lot in that time period? And what are the specialties we have to try? Thanks for any help you can give us.

  1. Sulmona is a great town. The home of "Confetti" the famed colorful candy coated almonds. A Roman aquaduct is still standing and runs right through the town center. As far as restaurants there are several good ones. Our favorite is Gino right off the main street, Ovidio, on Piazza Publicito. They only serve at lunch time, but it is a true feast of regional specialties. You can get an idea from their site,www.lalocandadigino.it
Around the region there are many hiking trails, a beautiful lake village in Scanno and excellent wines. The tragedy of the recent earthquake has not dulled the determination of the Abruzzese, even though the Fascist era architecture of L'Aquila has been destroyed. Hope you enjoy your trip!

On the western edge of Abruzzo is a small town named Carsoli with an unbelievable restaurant call L'Angolo d'Abruzzo. It is well worth going out of your way for. I think Mario Batali has waxed poetic about it in one of his shows. Also, for Seafood, on the east coast is a small town called Porto Recanati that has a boardwalk filled with little semi-permanent restaurants serving great fish. Go to Nannetta and make sure you get the mixed seafood appetizer--wow!

Oh no! Batali has blabbed about L'Angolo d'Abruzzo? Well, here's the real news: it's right across the street from the train station, so you can go for lunch from Rome very easily and sleep it off on the way home.

    2. Thanks so much for the suggestions. We will be sure to visit those places if we can!

Porto Recanati is in Marche and would be a near 400km round trip (a bit extreme for lunch) but Pescara has plenty of good restaurants on the charming sea-front, so that would be worth a visit. Sulmona and Carsoli are good tips, too.

Taverna 58 in Pescara is also rated (but isn't on the sea-front): http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant...
