Ceviche: Vuelve a la Vida ("Back to Life”) or “corpse reviver” (“Levanta Muertos")
I have been tryig local versions of the mixed seafood cocktaill and was wondering how it got the name. I stumbled across this great site with lots of references
'"Vuelve a la Vida” ("Back to Life” or “Return to Life") is a ceviche cocktail that appears to have originated in Veracruz, Mexico. It contains various seafoods such as shrimp, octopus, oysters, crab, et al., with ketchup/tomato sauce/salsa, lime juice, onions, cilantro, and chile peppers. This “corpse reviver” (sometimes called “Levanta Muertos") is supposed to cure any hangover.y
That sounds so much better as a hangover cure than menudo or greasy Jack in the Box tacos.
The local versions here usually have whatever seafood is fresh such as shrimp, conche, mussels, octopus. They are usually served with chiplin tamales. I was wondering if anyone else has had these served with tamales?
I've actually had the one in this photo. I don't know if it was the best in the world but it is the best I've has so far including the few US versions I've had. I guess it has to do with freshness.
