Anthing flies in Newport? [moved from Boston]

digga Jun 3, 2010 07:09 PM

We have used BC strictly for sun, cold beers, and fried food, usually after the ICA or a walk on the waterfront and, honestly, it has served those purposes quite well. (Luckily, none of us have ever felt ill afterwards.) Did y'all know that they opened a branch last year in Newport, RI? Yikes! but anything flies in Newport, foodwise. I think BC typifies a certain type of bar/restaurant. There are plenty of places in New England seaside towns where we have eaten and didn't bat an eyelash to the food quality because, well, you have some cold beers, friendly bartenders, bolstered by passable bar food/fried seafood/etc and hell, the sun is shining, there's some crappy live band playing Jack Johnson covers, but life is somehow good. But I'm from RI, so what do I know?! :D

What do you mean anything flies in newport? There are some great restaurants there!
I'm a Rhode Islander if you couldn't already tell :)

Snoop, Please enlighten us. Which are the "great" restaurants you speak of? Been to many in Newport and have yet to stumble on a great one. Some have been ok but none I would tag great. Love Newport and would love to be able to enjoy exceptional food when there.

I usually stop in Fall River and eat Portuguese.

Care to share - or point out a not so obvious link that would be useful? I drove right through Fall River last weekend, but wouldn't have a clue as to where to stop for a good meal. East Providence too, for that matter?

Thanks - your opinion is always valued!

You know it has been two years or so and I don't exactly remember the names of places. Browse around chowhound and the names of a few places should come up.

Here is one thread I found on the New England Archive with a quick search, but there have been several over the years:

I like Sagre's in Fall River.

People have also recommended Antonio's in New Bedford.

Antonio's is awesome. Cafe Mimo and Cafe Funchal are also worthy of a visit in New Bedford.

The Azorean stuff, in particular, is not to be missed.

                  Here's a couple of suggestions:

                  Marisqueira Azores
                  1445 S Main St
                  Fall River, MA 02724-2603
                  (508) 646-1511

                  TA Restaurant
                  408 S. Main St.
                  Fall River, MA

A friend and I wrote up some of this stuff here:

                  Marisqueira Azores Restaurant
1445 S Main St, Fall River, MA 02724

Also right by the east side of Providence is Bacaro. Definitely give it a try!

coco - pour judgement on broadway is one of my favorite places in new england. as far as bang for your buck (which ch'ers care about) - it's by far the best deal in newport. burgers are $5.95!!! better than any $13 burger i get here in boston. i'm a beer-hound, and it's by far the best beer bar around. the wine list is small, but hand picked and creative. lump crab with scallion pancakes and sauteed spinach is $12.95!!! no entrees are over $15. they also offer three types of steamed little necks. go now and thank me later.

The absolute best is the Clark Cooke House! And I'm not talking about the Candy store or the Bistro. You have to try the Porch dining menu, which is only available in the summer and the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. I'll put their food up to any restaurant in Boston. I'm going tonight actually so I'll let you know if it's consistent with last year's meal.

The meals are pretty pricey here FYI

Castle Hill is also lovely in Newport and if you're in Providence... CAV is my current favorite restaurant
