Authentic Sichuan in Newbury Park; Xiao Long Bao Too

Chandavkl Jun 3, 2010 02:27 PM

Thanks to the two unknown Chowhounders who provided leads concerning two authentic Chinese food sources in Newbury Park that indeed panned out.

First stop was Sesame Inn, an especially unlikely venue located deep in the residential area of Newbury Park south of the 101. Even a quick look at the menu belied anything of interest, but when I asked whether this was the only menu, I was told they had a "new" menu, too. On this menu were a dozen dishes of items like Sichuan tofu, sesame noodles, shredded potato with ginger, pepper shrimp, bitter melon, cumin pork, mushrooms with friend gluten, and soybeans with cabbage and tofu skin. Sesame Inn is at 3327 Kimber Dr., just of Wendy Dr.

For Xiao Long Bao you need to go up the road to Red Wok, at 2368 Michael Dr., near the Borchard Road ramp to the 101. There's a 20 item Chinese menu (half written in Chinese only), including a number of pork chop and pepper salt dishes. Also some interesting noodle soup items on the regular menu.

I've been to both Red Wok and Sesame Inn. Never knew about the "new" menu at Sesame Inn, thanks for the tip.

I tend to frequent Red Wok more, they do have some nice Szechwan specialties. Never knew about the XLB. I recommend their noodle soups and salt & pepper pork chops.
