Swinging through Austin

hairycover Jun 2, 2010 06:16 PM

I'm making my way back East from California and I would like to check out some cool places. (Bars, Restaurants, ETC) I'm not looking for anything too fancy just really good. Whats the greatest hits Austin has near the downtown area? I'm staying at the Four Seasons.

Downtown? Search Chowhound Austin for reports on Parkside (uber alles), Casino el Camino, Chez Nous, Iron Works, Lambert's, Manuel's, Jezebel. Some of those places are fancy though.

If you don't leave downtown, you'll miss the best nonfancy-and-delicious chow. Except for Parkside, which might be Austin's best restaurant.

On the flip flop, the best Mexican food in Austin is way down south. A shack on Burleson called El Meson jousts with a joint lodged in the back of a C-Mart gas station on William Cannon called Mi Ranchito for the crown. Both places are cheap, and both will crush your face with awesome. A couple weeks ago I ate at Mi Ranchito four times in one week. They're starting to worry about me there.

Wherever you go, read the Chowhound reviews first. All the places listed above have good and bad dishes. Leverage the experiences of the chowscouts to avoid wasted meals!

Just came back from a bday meal at Parkside and the spring pea raviloi are sublime. Little tipsy and was reading some posts and saw Parkside mentioned so I impulsed this one. Sorry if its a bit non sequitur.

Wife is Mexican and I'm coming from Socal so I'm not chomping at the bit for Mexican. I was thinking maybe brisket or a good breakfast place or just a really cool bar. Thanks though.

If you like good cocktails, try Peche or Parkside. Parkside for their raw bar and/or burger. Peche for more French-type food. Have loved sitting and eating at the bar at both.

2nd Parkside, Casino el Camino, Chez Nous, Ironworks, Lambert's, but had a really bad experience at Manuel's and felt Jezebel to be only good on paper (nothing lived up to the descriptions, our sweetbreads were chewy and undercooked, they made up for it by giving us sorbet before our entrees, food needed more seasoning and less "tall" plating).
