my favorite in la is hands down the vegan reuben at meet market in silver lake: rye bread, 1000 island, sauerkraut, marinated wheat meat, balsamic beats & daiya mozzarella

other notables
flore cafe: both the eggless egg salad and the tempeh tu-no melt are incredible.

john's garden in malibu: really good classic california hippy sandwiches (avocado, tomato, sprouts on wheat bread).

the mushroom sandwich at good girl dinette in highland park is amazing. loved the caprese from bay cities deli. vito's eggplant parm was also very good, but i've not yet tried bay cities. did not like capriatti's version. auntie em's kitchen in eagle rock has a wonderful veggie sandwich, filled with avacado, cucumber, sprouts, etc etc etc.

Check out Comfort Cafe at Fred Segal Santa Monica. They have sandwiches that qualify as the best vegetarian in LA. I would include their burgers in this sandwiches list because they aren't really burgers (which you are avoiding for the list) but sandwiches in my opinion. They have great stuff like sun dried tomato catsup. On the same note, Fred Segal Melrose has Mauro Cafe which has some best quality vegetraian sandwiches.

Joan's on Third has some of the best vegetarian sandwiches.

Pascal's Newport Beach also has some of the best vegetarian sandwiches.

The bakeries at Mitsuwa Marketplace--Costa Mesa and Torrance location have some great fruit and cream sandwiches also.

Lastly in Little Tokyo, Senka Cafe makes a decent vegetarian sandwich.

I guess you would have to make a list, some criteria, try these places out--along with everyone else's recommendations to create your list of the best.

Not a vegetarian, but I enjoy the vegan sandwiches at Veggie Grill including the best tasting vegetarian burger I've had.

Vito's eggplant parmigiana sandwich is very good, probably my favorite vegetarian sandwich.

Might've been a bad day (I love their pesto slices), but the Vito's eggplant parm sandwich I had was mediocre at best. I had a really good one at Bay Cities.

I always liked the grilled vegetables sandwich at Zabie's in Santa Monica. I haven't had it a a while though.

Manhattan Bread & Bagel in MB also does a great grilled veggie sandwich that we get catered in at work all the time.

they make a couple of vegetarian sandwiches that are terrific.
also, for my vegetarian friend's birthday party i brought a tray of those sandwiches that they made on various types of delicious mini rolls. the sandwiches were a big hit at the party. the whole tray was gobbled up by the carnivores/omnivores at the party within moments.

for your personal veggie burger edification:
m cafe de chaya (they serve, along with the burger their own homemade ketchup. this sauce really doesn't taste much like ketchup, imho, but it does taste delicious.
the counter (this is a chain, i believe they do a better job of preparation at the el segundo and santa monica branch than they do at the mdr branch)
houstons (they offer free corkage at houston's so that gets them even more points in my book)

if you like the distinct flavor or walnuts in your burger, 26 beach has a walnutty veggie burger.

The M Cafe burger is really good--the Big Macro, heh . . . they do make their own ketchup--it's not homemade since they make it in the restaurant. They make their ketchup to be in line with their food philosophy. However, they don't put it in their burgers.

Green Peas does make vegan sandwiches--on the other hand, they aren't very good. They are good, but they aren't the best. I'd hate the best be a sort of the best of what there is, rather than sandwiches that are truly the best and can compete with meat sandwiches. I support them because they are around the block, and as a vegetarian I like to keep my options. They are still adjusting their menu, and have added a lot of meat options.

Green Peas isn't *great*, but I used to go there regularly before they raised their prices. They use good vegan products (Daiya brand cheese and Gardein proteins) and have some good house-made soups. They also have a tasty pretzel bread.

although i really enjoyed the GREEN PEAS SANDWICH that i used to get there, i stopped going when i realized that in order to be satisfied until dinner, i needed to have the sandwich loaded with a double portion of their gardein fake meat. this add-on brought the tab up to the $14 level--a little too high for me for lunch.

What are gardeins? I thought daiya was a type of vegan cheese, I didn't know it was a brand. What is it made out of? You can get mozzarella cheese and other dairy cheeses if you are vegetarian and not vegan from Green Peas. I feel like their sandwich recipes need tweaking still. I usually get pizza from them anyway, for $8 you get a really filling pizza. But since this was about sandwiches . . .

Tried the Big Macro yesterday since they had their $5 birthday promotion, and gotta say I was pretty impressed. I'm a meat eater, but I was surprised at how good it was, and I didn't even miss the meat. Though, the one thing I didn't like about it was their bun - it was kind of chewy and a little dense. Oh, and it was ridiculously busy (because of the promotion) and it took me about 40min to order and another 20 min to get my food.

honestly, i wouldn't bother driving there if it wasn't for the bun!
not too many buns, imho, are actually worth the calories and carbs, but THEIR BUN is the ONLY one that i'll actually eat entirely because, to me, it is THAT GOOD.

are you asking if it is a wheat flour bun? if so, the answer is yes.
looks iike a big fluffy bun, but has more texture than most others.
whenever i get a hamburger bun, be it at m cafe de chaya or anywhere else, i them to toast it more than they normally do and to leave out any sauce because i like the texture of a toasted bun and all sauces seem to undermine that.
the bun at m cafe de chaya is substantial and textured enough for me, and it is not at all cardboardy nor mushy. it has a flavor of it's own that adds to the sandwich, unlike many other buns which are just physical scaffolding for the burger..

M Cafe's $5 promotion was great. M Cafe used to be a lot cheaper, or rather they gave you a lot more food for the same price. Though even back then they were pricy. Anyway they have these side salads, they used to give you a decent container, now they give you like some tiny 3 bite container.

During the promotion, the Culver location cheaped out--because they didn't include the side salads with the items, whereas the other locations did. I think the Culver City M Cafe is kind of the bottom of the heap, they don't have many of the items there at all. Like in their new summer items, they had 2 of the new food items like out of 8.

MD--the bread was different during the $5 promotion. I go to there a lot, and I was specifically disappointed by that. I am glad you mentioned that because I thought maybe it was just me. It is a macrobiotic bun. I would describe it differently and a little bit contradictorily compared to westsidegal, in that I think that it falls in the realm of quintessential burger buns and is a good one. I like their big macro sauce, and I think the bun isn't destroyed by the sauce. I don't think though if you go without the sauce like westsidegal, that you wouldn't enjoy it--the bun is good as are the ingredients.
