What's your pick for the top 5 Burger's in your great city. Here's a few I have thought about.

Shopsin's, Shake Shack, Peter Luger's, The Little Owl, BLT Burger, JG Melon, R.U.B. BBQ, Corner Bistro, Big Nick's Burgers and Pizza and Black Iron Burger.

Please add more. Thanks.

The answer to this question is very, very simple: The Bacon Cheeseburger at Soup Burg on Lex and 76th, served medium rare. I'm telling you all right now- whoever is not familiar with the perfection of this beautiful beast, I implore you to take the 6 right to 77th and Lex, take a seat in this glorious little, unassuming coffee shop lookin' joint, and order said burger. You will freak....out.

And no- I have absolutely no affiliation with this establishment in any way- other than the fact that I thank the high heavens it exists in my city.

Korzo Haus in East Village has my heart. Fried bun, beet ketchup, unpretentious and not even hyped up.

Much as I like Shackburgers, my new fave is the High Heat Burger - High Heat, Bleecker b/ Thompson and West Broadway. Big thick patty of good meat, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, a bit of onion, and their own pickle relish, which definitely adds a little pizazz. Their schtick is the 900 degree grill, which puts a great, tasty char on the patty, but you can still get it cooked rare if you want. A bg drippy mess, to be sure, but wow! Last night's takeout was the best ever, tightly foil wrapped, maybe it melded on the way home. Garlic/herb fries are OK, but I don't bother any more, the burger fills me up. The amber beer is excellent with the burger.

Interestingly, many years ago Cafe Figaro , only a block away from High Heat Burger, had the best burgers in the city. Figaro is now gone, and the last few years it hasn't been all that good. I had a real good burger at Le Petite Abeille the other day, and another good one at fast food Brooklyn Burger at Resort World Casino in Queens.

James in Brooklyn has a burger that melts like butter in your mouth. Check it out, and feel free to get anything else they serve too because it's all amazingly wonderful. Also, I think Rare on Lex and 37th, I think, does a really good burger. Not sure about their other location.

I'm wondering what the longest CH thread is. This one has 130, I know there are older threads . this one only goes to 2010. But It's difficult to go back and read all the back posts or what you thought a year ago. I think I said Walker's a long time ago, or maybe Big Nick's,,, lately I said Jeepney because it was different. I think we need to start a new thread on Burgers, it will be easier to read what everyone thinks. I had a decent burger at The Smith last week, and Le Petit Abeille has a consistently good one.

I had a really good burger at Jeepney Gastropub. It was a mix of high quality ground beef and Filipino Longanisa. Topped with a banana ketchup sauce blend, on a really good bun. It came with a side of crispy house made plantain chips and taro chips. They call it a longga burger.
The menu consultant was a Filipino chef who is a chef at Minetta's. You know how good Minetta's burgers are, Well these are right up there with those. The chef at Jeeney, is chef/owner at Maharlika.

When I eat a burger, I don't want the texture of longaniza...but since this version had yet to enter my gullet, what's your take on it?

Actually if they didn't tell you the ground meat was ground longanisa you would not know it by the consistency. It's more of a flavor thing with these burgers. The texture is the same as any other burger and its juicy .

I still haven't tried Spotted Pig's burger, but I just had Breslin's beef burger and really loved it. In fact, it may have taken seat in my #1 in NYC position of those that I've tried so far (including Black Label burger at Minetta, etc.). It's stellar and, oddly, I think it might only be offered to those who are eating in the Ace lobby (and possibly also by room service?), which may explain why I can't find mention of it anywhere on this board. This means you pretty much have to forgo service and eat it amongst a sea of macbook pros. I like this--it provides a no-frills option for grabbing a high quality burger--but it obviously eliminates groups looking to "dine".

I'm curious to hear from those who have had it, how the patty and bun compare to those at Spotted Pig--are they essentially the same? If so, this is a great way to avoid the wait at SP. It's also topped with sharp cheddar and a few bits of their bacon and served with their thrice cooked fries, for those who aren't fans of the gorgonzola and shoestrings.

Apparently they bake their own buns and Serious Eats describes the bun as "straddling the line between Wonderbread and Briôche (admittedly quite a thick line)."

Yeah, I ended up finally getting around to Spotted Pig's burger after I posted that comment. It didn't disappoint. It's not easy to compare the two when I've only had each one once, and almost a month apart, but I'd say the patties and buns are very similar, if not the same. That said, the flavors are obviously very different between the two burgers as a whole due to the cheese differences and addition of bacon at Breslin/Ace. Can't really say I preferred one over the other, either--they're both excellent.

I managed to hit up the Lobby Bar at the Ace Hotel today for the Breslin beef burger. Well-seasoned patty, sharp cheese, smoky bacon shreds. A very solid burger overall. My only complaints are that the patty could be a bit juicier, and that the bun was a bit too dense. I'm always in favour of a hefty bun that holds up under the burger juice (which this one does), but it's a bit "doughy", and so as I chew through the burger it feels slightly pasty in my mouth.

Also liked the scrumpet a lot. Gamy lamb, deep fried, served with a mint vinaigrette that pairs quite well.

Cool, glad you enjoyed. I've been thinking about going back the past few days. The one I had was impressively juicy--it was one of the things that I found really notable. I doubt they've changed the makeup of their patties, so must be some variation in cooking. I admittedly don't pay a whole lot of attention to burger buns unless they force me to by being really exceptional or really bad, so I don't have much to say there other than I obviously thought the burger as whole was very good. I'll have to pay closer attention next time.

Good to know about the scrumpet, I'm always tempted to order it there.

My favorite burger is Big Nick's, because represents exactly what I want of a burger. between the more upscale burgers, I feel there is a huge gap between Nice Matin's delicious 5 napkin burger, and 5 Napkin Burger's mediocre one.

The Stumble Inn (1454 2nd Ave). They may not be everyone's idea of gourmet or upscale but their stuffed burgers draw me back every time I'm in town!No one else makes me "crave" like the Stumble Inn. My favorite? With all due respect to fellow CH'ers, I hate searching board for threads and finding an old thread with tons of posts on the topic. But, I know it's proper etiquette to do so. So, without reading all the posts, I would like to recommend the Kobe Burger at Spitzer's on Ludlow and Rivington. They make a good burger. Nice and juicy, you can add cheese, bacon or an egg to the burger for additional charge. The bun is a real good one. The french fries are hand cut, and used to be fried in duck fat,,, it does not say duck fat on the menu anymore but I think they still are done in duck fat.

I went to Big Nick's today on UWS, they flame broil their burgers in the window. This place is the "Greek version" of Shopsins. The menu is insane. Everything one can imagine eating, and then there are 1000 other dishes posted on the walls. In any case, the burgers are awesome, they have 4 pages of burgers on the menu. a beef page, turkey burger page, veggie burgers, lamb burgers, kobe burger , stuffed burger, on and on,,I had a regular cheese burger and it was perfect. The taste exactly the taste I want. I have to say Big Nick's is the best burger in NYC for about $5. Minetta's has a great burger,, but this burger at Big Nick's is a real hamburger, Perfect!

I know the debate for best burger will go on forever. So many different styles, meats, creativeness etc. I personally like old school burgers that I ate at home as a kid. Cooked on a black cast iron griddle. Crispy flavorful outside. and constantly pressed down to add to the crispiness. But I know many people love when the juice pours out with each bite. Bouley upstairs had a very "pouring out" burger. So , in any case, I was skeptical as to whether I would enjoy the burgers at Corner Bistro.
I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. I had a medium cooked cheese burger. It was more like medium rare, which was fine with me. It was juicy. But the chef pressed down on it with the spatchler several times, which pleased me. The result was a crisp outside but still a juicy inside. The meat had a good taste. I'm not sure of the meat they use. My mom used to get the chopped me ground for her at the butcher. A mixture of neck and tenderloin. But I think most use sirloin these days. So Corner Bistro scored high with me. The plastic plates were not impressive. The french fries were not very good compared to fries so many other places have.
I also still enjoy Big Nick's burgers, and Walker's. Brooklyn Diner's burger is overrated. Soup burg used to be good. Cheezburger Cheesburger I don't like. Five Guys is fast food. The debate goes on.

I tried Fast & Fresh burger on 23rd and park and i was pleasantly surprised. it was very juicy and had a nice taste that I could tell was not just ground beef. I asked someone what was in the burger and they told me it was a short rib and brisket blend. I was again surprised. Also I got the burger very fast - like in 2 or 3 minutes. The neapolitan shake I had was good as well. I definitely recommend this place.

I tried their fries when it first opened, and at the time, they were fresh hand cut and superior to anything at In and Out or even Shake Shack. Problem is, every time I've thought about going back, the cook was scrubbing equipment, or there was some other unappetizing activity going on.

It's an open kitchen, and on more than one instance, I've seen them scrubbing during service hours, with cleaning products out on the prep service areas.

While on the subject of burgers, Korzo Haus in the East Village does a great take on the classic burger. Flame-grilled, wrapped in langos dough, then deep fried. It's not for everyone, but I get the burger once a month.

Although, I actually like their Original the most. I've tried the Slav and two of the Steve's (monthly specials or the like) and I found the Original to be the most balanced and interesting. Of course, you never know what the guy might come with next...

Also I hear they have a killer veggie burger, but I'm in no hurry to try.

Korzo's burger tastes pretty much like a variety of beef piroshki to me, only instead of beef cooked ground, it's made into a patty. I was expecting something a little more unique, and wondered why the comparison wasn't more obvious to people.

I would personaly not consider this burger phenominal. Good yes, but not much more. Also, the rest of the food at PJ Clarks is terrible. Grab a burger, OK anything more, no way.

The burgers at Clarkes's are decent. They're about 30% smaller than a standard pub burger. Some people might like that. I even like that on days when I'm not very hungry.

The burgers at Old Town Bar just north of Union Square are similar. Since OT is a quieter venue you might find it more enjoyable if you're in the area. The ambiance is similar to Clarke's.

Especially for those of you who only eat humanely raised beef (my husband is one) this is a great choice - probably the best choice in the city. I've had to suffer through the likes of Better Burger (mediocre at best) because of my husband's "organic beef only" rule, and I'm so happy to have BareBurger. Seriously, Better Burger WISHES it could be BareBurger. They serve bison, elk, ostrich, lamb, etc. as well, but I keep coming back to their beef. Patty is perfectly cooked with right amount of char on the outside, every time. So flavorful. Their fries and onion rings are pretty good too, they come with a rotating selection of interesting condiments. I highly recommend it.

I tried the cheese burger at the Parker Meridien today (thanks Loratliffe) and a short while later my baseline inexpensive cheese burger at Shake Shack (44th St.). The Parker burger was very good. I had mine medium rare, and it came correctly red-pink in the middle with a very nice char on the outside. I had it with "the works" -- lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, mustard -- and the fixings were a bit too much for the meat and the bun. They kept falling out. The burger cost a little over $7.50. With fries and a bottle of water (they had no tap water), each over $3, the total came to $15.49. The fries, thin in the shoestring spirit but not fully there, were OK, but lacking in flavor in a way I couldn't put my finger on. The burger was cooked properly, and the meat tasty but a little under salted. I was at the Joint at 11:30 in a successful attempt to avoid the crowd and get a seat.

I worked off the burger for a bit, then waddled over at 2:30 to Shake Shack for my comparison. I had the double shack ($7) and fries ($2.65). Had I also had bottled water ($2), the head-to-head comparison cost with tax would have been $12.68, I think. The Shack meat patties didn't have the char of the Parker patty, but were better seasoned, and I felt tastier on the whole, despite being cooked more medium-well than medium-rare. The burger also had better balance, with just the right amount of sauce, tomato and lettuce. I think I prefer this burger, but by a small margin. The balance tips more decisively in favor of SS when you also consider the shakes, custard, etc.

Plus it's a reasonable size, unlike my other favorite, Five Napkin Burger, which is a bit much (for me) at 10oz.

However the newer "Five Napkin" restaurants have expanded that concept by creating additional versions of the original burger. Personally I think they should not mess with a good thing - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think Minetta Tavern black label is the best.

I wanted to like the DB Bistro burger, but the shortrib filling is often lukewarm and has an oddly slippery mouthfeel.

The Breslin's lamb burger is good but a bit too salty. The fries are excellent.

I love the beef and pork sliders at Fatty Crab - kind of unconventional with all those spicy asian flavors.

Also like Five Napkin burger (UWS) and JG Melon (UES). I've never been to Shake Shack.

The best bar burger and one of the least acknowledgedI think is Kinsale Tavern's Super Burger. Plus at $6.95 with fries it's a deal these days. It's ben one of my cravings for years now.

It's a hefty price tag at $40 but worth every bite. the patty is cooked perfectly, the bun is pillowy soft, soaks up the juices yet doesn't fall apart when you hold it. the truffle aioli that comes with it is good on the burger, on fries, on everything...oh man i'm drooling just thinking about it

It does come through in the cheese as a background flavor. It's not overpowering but it lingers. Just enough to know it's there. But the aioli that comes with, there is no doubt of truffle in there.

I think they put a touch of bbq sauce on the outside at the last second to seal in the juices or something, but it is very good.

The burger I had at the Breslin was flavorful although was slightly over salted IMO, but I like to have tomatoes on my burger and I dislike the fact that they don't serve it with lettuce, tomato or onion on the side so that I can make the decision myself as to whether I want an unadulterated burger or not.

I'm not a huge fan of Shake Shack, I don't really get the craze. It is inconsistent, ranging from good to soggy and gross.

It was messy. I kept having to put it down to attend to burger juice running down my arm, and my napkin was filthy by the end of it. I could have stopped after a few bites, and not regretted it.

Reasonably priced at $14 for a plate that comes with fries. Well worth it.

The sliders are pretty tasty but not quite as good as White Manna. I've only had the regular single cheeseburger sliders. They have a few decent beers on tap and I think it was only $4 a pint. I've also only been during the afternooon so thankfully it was doucheless. Not sure of the crowd at night

I treated Deb to a 3 p.m. burger at Spotted Pig two weeks ago. I plied her with prosecco. At the end of the day, I loved my burger and she was less than thrilled. I think the roll was less than stellar but that was my only complaint. Deb was underwhelmed top to bottom.
