Looking for recent impressions of Ganda

  • 5

My husband read James Oseland's write-up in the LA Saveur, and has his heart set on going when we visit next month. I'm turning to my trusted Chowhounds to give me their opinions! We have such a short time, and I have such a long list....is this worth knocking Anticucheria Danessi, Langer's, Mozza, and/or Moles la Tia of the list? Thanks for any input!

  1. Just bumping this up to see if if any one has words of wisdom....looks like it coming down to letting go of Anticucheria Danessi or Moles la Tia ...... help! I need confidence that there is something at Ganda that will make me not regret missing lomo saltado/grilled beef hearts or quail in mole negro!!!

I'll bump again in hopes you get a better answer. Haven't personally been to Ganda in 1+ years, but wouldn't replace anything on your list with it. I can't speak to its being the most authentic Thai in the U.S. - sounds like one of those grand Saveur overstatements to me - but I doubt most on this board would put it in their top 5 Thai for LA. For me, its downfall is that steam table and the lack of freshness in those dishes. Still, might be something I'm missing.

Thank you neobite! I have heard/read rhapsodies about a shredded fried catfish dish... what I'm getting from you is that the restaurant probably can be very good, but not destination worthy with only 3.5 days, a 5 year old, Disneyland, and the rest of my list to prioritize????

At least, that is what I am going to try and make my husband believe....and make sure he has enough mole and tacos to sooth his ruffled palate!

        Thanks again for responding!

You have to understand how hard it is for me to turn you away from Thai in Los Angeles - it's one of the several ethnic cuisines I think is done better here than anywhere else in the country. I've heard great things about Danessi, and Moles la Tia is wonderful. So, no, I wouldn't bump anything on your list for Ganda - I'd much sooner steer you to my personal favorites Ruen Pair or Jitlada - BUT if you're in the market for great Thai AND you're heading to D-Land, you could do worse than making a quick stop at the much-loved Renu Nakorn in nearby Norwalk. Their catfish is pretty divine.

Many thanks, neobite. I will keep your Thai recs in mind - especially for a late-night post-disney meal....I appreciate the guidance, and will report back!
