CHEGO - LIKE ?

Roy is driving me nuts. I crave Chego but its "never open." Not for lunch (when we do most of our eating) never on sunday, nor monday either, and then there's the mob. We really wanted to take a visitor tonight.

Does anyone (exilkiss anyone?) know a reasonable substitute: robust Korean (sic) bowl food, of course it won't be Roys (not so available) interpretation.

  1. We've been to Chego twice recently for dinner. Once we ate in and the other night we got it to go. No real issues to report about eating there, other than their parking lot being a bit of a challenge (and for which you need to be ready to display some patience to park successfully - or look for an on street spot).

    1. The Alibi Room in Culver City/Mar Vista has Roy's basic food truck menu. I would wonder if they might be offering some of Chego's dishes under their "weekly specials" dishes? Might be worth a call.

They most likely will not be doing that so if you really want to try Chego you will just have to do what everyone else does and lineup.

I was just there Thursday night around 7:15pm and the tables were only half full. I found parking in the lot, but it was the next to last spot. Since it was take out you have to add the covers to your food. There is no real cover for the prime rib dish so I wrapped some aluminum foil over the top. The other two dishes (the pork belly and the hen house) came in bowls that were there, but the plastic is very soft so if you put one bowl over the other the covers squash down into the food. The food is tasty enough, but I'm not sure I'd consider it a "must have." There were about 3 parking spots free when I left. Oh yeah, I did get an order of the cup of pickles. It does go good with the food.

If it's worth it to the OP, it only takes a call to confirm.

Alibi's hours are basically the same as Chego's.

If you go around 9pm, you should not have a problem, especially on Tuesday or Wednesday

what about 10pm? are they closed on both sundays and mondays?

                  thanks.

If I'm reading the OP's intentions he wants something "Chego like" but around lunch time or when the Chego isn't open. If you have a Korean restaurant you frequent you might ask them to whip up something you think is Chego like. Years back I used to frequent a place called Aloha Island Hot Dogs in El Segundo. It was run by a lovely Korean couple and they made Vienna beef hot dogs and chicken bowls and such. Since I was a "frequent flyer" at the place the wife would sometimes let me try some of her concoctions so I'd get a chicken bowl with some homemade kim chee and korean style bean sprouts (on the side) thrown in for free. They sold the place to an older gentleman who ruined the place and the place went belly up. I used to run into the couple at Costco Hawthorne, but I haven't seen them in years. They told me when they sold the place they were opening a food place in the clothing district in downtown L.A. Wish I knew where they are. The wife was a great cook and super nice.

let me know if you find out where they resurfaced, it does sound pretty great.

I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. Somehow I missed your response "kevin."
Alas....it was a number of years ago since I saw them. I don't run into them at the Hawthorne Costco any longer. I vaguely recall a mention of "11th Street near Los Angeles," which would put them in the clothing district in downtown L.A. It was years ago so they may have moved on since then.
