Great atmospheric bars for a cocktail?

Can anyone recommend any great atmospheric bars for a cocktail in Manhattan? Not really looking for an atmospheric dive bar....more like somewhere really nice to have a drink and soak in the ambience. A view would be a plus (but not essential).

Thanks for the help!

The Mandarin Oriental lounge has a wonderful view and great cocktails. It's pricey but really nice.

I second the Mandarin Oriental! Elegance that can't be beat. And great drinks. Who cares if they're $19 a piece! Totally worth it.

Campbell Apartment at Grand Central is our place for cocktails when we are in NYC.

21 has a wonderful bar, I think it is very underrated and hardly ever mentioned on this board. Also I love the King Cole Bar and Temple Bar.

oh yes on the King Cole bar. Then you can go to Aquavit for dinner after.

For probably the best view (and prices to match) - I would suggest Salon de Ning, on the 24th floor of the Peninsula Hotel. It has views to South Street and Stunning views of Fifth Avenue and Central Park .

I second Salon de Ning. I also like the Bookmarks rooftop bar at the Library hotel. Never really crowded; great drinks.

For a completely different atmosphere, Bourgeois Pig or Pegu Club are good.

One of my favorite places to have a drink or two is Cipriani in Grand Central Terminal.Well made drinks, although a bit pricey and you can sit at a table overlooking the Main Concourse.Very NY. And if you want you are just steps away from the Campbell Apt. as
LNG212 suggested. My wife and I recently did the Cipriani/Campbell Apt combo with brother and SIL who were don't get into NYC very often and they really enjoyed it.

both in midtown - Algonquin hotel bar, seriously old school; Bookends on top of the library hotel - but it can get very crowded with after work people.
I guess Pegu has atmosphere to spare but I can't groove to British imperial nostalgia.

I love the Oak Bar at the Plaza overlooking South Central Park but the Boarthouse is much better. The Water Club is another great place overlooking the East River @ 30th. The view is outstanding. Food is nice as well.

went to pdt for the first time last weekend. loved it. got thru on the phone at about 3:30pm and secured a table for two at 1:30am. stayed until last call at 2:45am. service was good. had a couple of lawn darts - tanguray, blanco tequila, chartreusse, green pepper, and lime - and they were very good. crif dogs looked good, too.

Above are some good suggestions already. I'd add the Campbell Apartment, though it doesn't have a view, the interior is amazing.

This is my recommend as well. It's so old school New York. And it is gorgeous.

if you are coming in from Toronto, many visitors enjoy the Boathouse in Central Park, the patio bar at Bryant Park, or even the rotating bar at the Times Square Marriott.

if you're looking for something a bit less touristy, you could try Stone Rose.
